Poverty Numbers: Administration Tries To Bury Data, Spin the Numbers
And Break From Census Precedent
Rep. Maloney says Census Bureau is attempting to "lump, dump and run"

WASHINGTON, DC - Ever since President Richard Nixon attempted to
manipulate poverty data, a career civil servant of the Census Bureau has
separately released the annual poverty statistics at the National Press Club
in downtown Washington. Until now. In four specific ways, today's dismal
poverty numbers - the amount of Americans in poverty grew to 36 million -
were released in a new and questionable manner that brings into question the
motivations of the Bush administration:
- the release of the poverty data was moved from the usual
late-September date to the middle of August, when media attention typically
wanes and when the Olympics are dominating global attention;
- the release of the data was moved for the only the second time in 30
years from the National Press Club in downtown Washington - literally where
the press works - to 10 miles away at the Census Bureau's remote
headquarters in Suitland, Maryland;
- the poverty and income numbers were uncharacteristically lumped into
the release of other statistics at the same time, including data on health
insurance coverage and the American Community Survey; and
- for the first time, a political appointee - Census director, Louis
Kincannon - not a career civil servant presented the data.
Rep. Carolyn Maloney (NY-14), former Ranking Member on the House
Census Subcommittee, said that releasing the statistics in such a manner
during a heated presidential race raises questions about the politicization
of the data.
"After 30 years of releasing the poverty data by itself in the third
week of September, they're trying to lump, dump and run," said Maloney.
"Could it be just a coincidence that, in the heat of a presidential campaign
hinging on the issue of jobs and the economy, the Census Bureau came up with
a brand-new procedure to release discouraging poverty numbers? These are cut
and dry numbers that we use to make serious policy, and we have a
long-standing precedent to release them in a transparent, non-political
manner. By breaking from the standard procedure in place since the Nixon
administration tried to manipulate the numbers, this administration is
trying to bury the bad news far away from downtown Washington under a pile
of other statistics. Regrettably, this is another example of the Bush
administration mishandling science and statistics.
"It seems as if the Census Bureau is becoming an appendage of
Bush-Cheney 2004. Had the economy been performing well and were the
expectations for positive poverty numbers high, they would have
hand-delivered the report to news organizations with a bow on it. But
poverty is up, the uninsurance rate is up and income has not kept up with
inflation, continuing the middle-class squeeze."

`Bubble Boy' here. It's a dead ringer. The litmus test? Ever see the
two of them in the same room?'' Other leading theories on why in the
world our would-be president, this week of all weeks, would ever let
himself be photographed in a silly suit on hands and knees? ``Looking
for weapons of mass destruction,'' said John Rooney, ``He was being
born,'' said Boston cop Bob Fitzsimmons. ``Imitating a giant
prophylactic,'' said Carol Fitzgerald at South Station. ``No, no. He's
a test tube tot,'' said a New Jersey delegate who wouldn't be named.
Some saw an ET-phone-home resemblance. Or Oompa Loompahs from ``Willy
Wonka.'' Others thought this was but another attempt by Mr. Aloof to
De-loof himself and show his madcap side. But the top two theories on
why in the world our would-be president, this week of all weeks, would
ever let himself be photographed in a silly suit on hands and knees?
No. 1: Paying homage to Woody Allen's scared sperm in ``Everything You
Always Wanted to Know About Sex...'' No. 2: Paying penance for
deep-sixing a DNC speaking role for Michael Dukakis. Thus Kerry
reprised the infamous tank ride. ``Whoever was there advising was not
entirely on top of the problem,'' said CNN's Wolf Blitzer on the
convention floor when asked to analyze Sperm-gate fallout. ``Oh give
me a break,'' said former New Hampshire Gov. Jeanne Shaheen, now a
Kerry campaign honcho, dismissing Sperm-gate inquiries as ridiculous.
So did several earnest delegates. But if ``Bubble Boy'' isn't of
tank-like proportions, it is a problem image-wise, no? If 30 years of
Duke's career could be summed up by one tank ride, can't, say, six
months of Kerry's be captured by Osama does Disneyworld? ``No,''
Shaheen shot back, polite but firm, leaving one to ponder: Was
there no mirror available? And where was Terry ``shove-it'' Heinz when
her man needed her?
On Broadway & 37 St in midtown Manhattan a 3 card monte dealer when
show the infamous picture of Kerry in between hustling tourists asked
suspiciously: "why is that man wearing that scumbag?" When told it was
John Kerry who was running for president the dealer just shook his
head and remarked, "that fool ought to sell tickets to that show" Mary
Conway, a tourist from Phoenix Arizona, just laughed hysterically
when shown the photo, Robert Defazio, a salesman from Erie
Pennsylvania just shook his head sadly and asked quizzically, "why
would anyone be stupid enough to let themselves be photographed
wearing a giant rubber?"

calling for democracy and the U.S. Constitution to be replaced by
religious government that he calls "Godism," calling the church-state
separation the work of Satan. "The church and the state must become
one as Cain and Abel," he said in the same sermon.

Administration, which has given his anti-sex missionaries $475,000 in
Abstinence-Only dollars to bring Moon's crusade against "free sex" to

the only group qualified to receive another, no-bid grant for HIV
education in Africa. Only after a competitor raised objections did the
CDC cancel the grant program entirely. Meanwhile, one of Moon's top
political movers, David Caprara, has been appointed by George W. Bush
to head AmeriCorps VISTA; and another former church VIP, Josette
Shiner, was given a senior trade position.

NBC Dumped Me for Finding Positive News in Iraq
NBC has refused to renew the contract of Iraq correspondent Dr. Bob
Arnot. He says the reason is that he dares to find progress.
"In a 1,300-word e-mail to NBC News president Neal Shapiro, written in
December 2003 and obtained by NYTV, Dr. Arnot called NBC News'
coverage of Iraq biased. He argued that keeping him in Iraq and on NBC
could go far in rectifying that," the New York Observer's Joe Hagan
reported today.
"Dr. Arnot included excerpts from an e-mail from Jim Keelor, president
of Liberty Broadcasting, which owns eight NBC stations throughout the
South. Mr. Keelor had written NBC, stating that "the networks are
pretty much ignoring" the good-news stories in Iraq. 'The definition
of news would incorporate some of these stories,' he wrote. 'Hence the
Fox News surge.'"
Keelor told the Observer: "Of course it's political. Journalism and
news is what unusual [events] happened that day. And if the schools
are operating, they can say that's usual. My response to that is, 'The
hell it is.' My concern there is that almost everything that has
occurred in Iraq since the war started is unexpected."
In his letter to Shapiro, Arnot wondered, as has the Bush
administration, why the network refused to admit positive developments
in Iraq. "As you know, I have regularly pitched most of these stories
contained in the note to Nightly, Today and directly to you. Every
single story has been rejected."
Arnot told the Observer he knew for "a fact" that Shapiro’s problem
with his reporting was that "it was just very positive."

example was the April 28 story in the Washington Times covering a mass
wedding ceremony performed by Moon. The writer of the story is a
member of Moon's church.
~~~ January 24 Washington Times article about a pro-United Nations
symposium sponsored by various Moon front groups. The story by a
Unification Church member did not disclose Moon's covert backing for
the event.
~~~ Washington Times Reporter Bill Gertz, a reported member of the
Unification Church, is notorious for reporting classified information
from U.S. intelligence agencies. He threatens the betrayal of the
sources and methods used to protect the American people. Some of
Gertz's reports may be costing U.S. taxpayers billions of dollars to
repair the damage that he has done. It is believed that some of
Gertz's sources are other Unification Church members who have been
covertly placed in the federal bureaucracy. Although he appears to be
exposing threats posed by China and other countries, he refuses to
expose Moon's dealings with communist countries, such as his car plant
in North Korea and reported payments to communist leaders.

~~~ In Japan, the Moon organization is in great trouble. Former Moon
followers have come forward to give testimony regarding their
experiences. Several Korean followers of Moon from the 1950's have
gone public in Japan and discussed disturbing elements of Moon's past,
including their allegations of Moon's sexual purification rites and
plagiarism of Moon's doctrine. There are currently hundreds of law
suits against Happy World, a Moon owned company which has been the
subject of one of the largest consumer fraud investigations in
Japanese history. Over 14,000 people have complained that they were
pressured to contribute millions of dollars for "spiritual sales".
This past year, the first trial resulted in a judgment against the
Moon group with a penalty of over two million dollars for the two
women plaintiffs.
~~~ In the 1980's, the Moon organization lost a major law suit in
England when they unsuccessfully sued the London Daily Mail for libel.
The court found the Daily Mail not guilty and determined that the
Moonies were in fact guilty of brainwashing and cutting people off
from their families. Again the Moon organization had to pay over two
million dollars in damages and expenses.

was in charge of all transportation for a 7 day fast in front of the
United Nations in which hundreds of Unification members were told by
Moon not to reveal to anyone who we were. Moon instructed me
personally to tell members that he was only married once before Hak Ja
Han. Mr. Kamiyama later told me that Moon had had children by two
other women before his present wife. I was also ordered to lie about
membership numbers. I was told to say publicly that there were 30,000
members in the U.S. when I knew the number was closer to 3,000.

Two attempts at humor were offensive. In his "oy, oy show," set to
Israeli music, a sidekick reads news reports - in this case, the
murder of the Russian-backed president of Chechnya. Franken's role is
to pipe
up with a lighthearted "oy, oy, oy." Yep, nothing tickles the ribs
like assassination.
Rock bottom came when she [Randi Rhodes] compared Bush and his family
to the Corleones in the "Godfather" saga. "Like Fredo, somebody ought
to take him out fishing and phuw," she said, imitating the sound of
gunfire.
Hmmm. Did Rush ever advocate offing the Clintons?
