"Because no evidence has developed to place Mr. Karr at the scene of
the crime and, in particular, because his DNA does not match that
found in the victim's blood, the People would not be able to establish

Yeah, well, in Australia, everybody walks around upside-down. And ya got
them big-***** mice that keep showing up and beat good ol' American pussycats
like Sylvester.
Oh. And, for better or worse, there are constitutional protections of
privacy in the United States that limit the government's ability to demand
DNA evidence on the basis of a whim or witch-hunt.
Now comes the hoary question, "If you're not guilty of a crime, why should
you object?" (to giving your DNA to the government)
In America, unlike your dingoes-stole-my-baby 2-and-a-half-world Outback,
the government's powers are strictly limited. The government isn't allowed
to assume guilt, it must prove guilt as it protects an assortment of
individual rights.
Even a psycho who wants to take credit for the Crime of the Decade can't be
convicted solely on the basis of some lies he may, in the depths of his
insanity, tell the government. The government still has to come up with
constitutional *proof* of his guilt.
Someone on one of these fora posted a few days ago that John Mark Karr may
have simply wanted to get his ***** out of Thailand to avoid real crimes with
real 3rd World punishments facing him. He ate prawns and drank champagne
knowing there's nothing that could support the claim of his guilt vis a vis
JonBenet's last Christmas present.
Now, it occurs to me that the Boulder police might have been able to collect
a DNA sample from Karr before hauling his ***** halfway around the world. And
it's a bonehead play that they didn't do that instead of buying Business
Class passage for their cops, which made it inevitable that their prisoner
would fly the same way back to America.
So the idiots of the Boulder cops, and the FBI, and all the rest (Interpol?
Thai authorities? Others...?) comes into play. Are *they* the people you'd
like to forfeit all your individual rights to? Just so they can collect the
DNA of anyone and everyone?!
As an Aussie, you have no choice.
As an American, I can only assume you accept that non-choice because you've
been walking around upside-down all your life.

Unlike Bush, who imprisons people for years and then lets them go.
