WE JUMP GUN.. DUE TO BUSH
By Vincent Moss Acting Political Editor
BRITAIN and America couldn't agree over when to move in on the
suspects behind the plot to bomb transatlantic planes.
British security chiefs wanted to continue surveillance operations on
the prime suspects for at least another week.
But US officials - acting on the orders of President George Bush -
demanded an immediate swoop to snatch the alleged terrorists.
British police now fear that the pre-emptive strike may have scuppered
a chance to collect vital evidence about the plot.
At least one suspect was on the brink of carrying out a "dry run"
ahead of the plan to bomb several US-bound jets, according to sources
in America.
Authorities in Britain had wanted him to go ahead with at least part
of the plan.
But they were overruled by their counterparts in the States, according
to US security sources.
British politicians believe that America's actions could have been
politically motivated to give President Bush a "quick win" in the war
on terror.
