State Dept. Official Faces Bribe Charge

WASHINGTON --
A State Department official accepted free flights to Las Vegas with
exotic dancers, expensive meals, hotel rooms in New York and other
bribes to speed up the visa process for a jewelry company, federal
prosecutors said Friday.
Michael John O'Keefe, the deputy nonimmigrant visa chief at the U.S.
Consulate in Toronto, was indicted on bribery and conspiracy charges
Friday.
Sunil Agrawal, the chief executive of New York-based STS Jewels, was
also charged.
Agrawal sent O'Keefe the names of employees who needed visas to work
for her company, prosecutors said, and O'Keefe scheduled them outside
the normal visa process.
O'Keefe did his best to make sure he conducted the interviews and
awarded 21 visas to STS employees, according to an indictment unsealed
Friday.
On Jan. 4, 2004, in the weeks leading up to one visa application,
Agrawal allegedly wrote O'Keefe an e-mail that said, "Your hotel
booking is confirmed in Hilton Millennium in Midtown Manhattan. Two
rooms are booked in your name. The car service will be there at the
airport to take you to the hotel."
The next day, prosecutors said, O'Keefe received a $3,000 ring from
Agrawal.
In return, prosecutors said O'Keefe worked hard for STS employees.
At one point, he allegedly resurrected a rejected file and scheduled
it for an expedited review.
In an e-mail, he described overruling a colleague who had rejected an
STS application out of concern that terrorists used jewelry to raise
money.
O'Keefe was scheduled to be presented in federal court Friday
afternoon.

I brought up a lot of the articles on the subject after a GOOGLE search.
They reveal the following:
"A career state department official working at the US Consulate in
Toronto,"
Carreer diplomat etc. is used over and over in all the reports.
No where did I read "Bush State Dept Official" except in this newsgroup.

State Dept. Official Faces Bribe Charge
By MATT APUZZO
Associated Press Writer
In an e-mail, he described overruling a colleague who had rejected an
STS application out of concern that terrorists used jewelry to raise
money.
O'Keefe was scheduled to be presented in federal court Friday
afternoon.

There is no mention in the article of the guy's government GS grade or
political affiliation. There is also no mention that the official did
anything illegal regarding the processing of the employees' visa
applications. Except for the gifts, this story reminds me of the
Seinfeld episode where Seinfeld takes over Newman's mail delivery
route, to help Newman qualify for a transfer to Florida. Seinfeld does
such a good job, the Post Office brass knows Newman didn't do the work,
all the mail was delivered on time, something the Post Office never
accomplishes.
Someone at ICE investigation's unit got a tip that a State Department
worker was actually working, not just filing visa applications away to
collect dust. That $3,000 ring probably cost the jewelry company owner
under $500. This investigation and prosecution of O'Keefe will
probably cost taxpayers $50,000.
Meanwhile, Cheney's unqualified daughter still has her high State
Department job in the Middle East section, making sure no bad (read
true) information on the Bush Iraq policy gets to Congress from the
State Department. Thinking that an underpaid Indian guy who polishes
and set jewels in a ring is a potential terrorist is bizarre. Paging
Babu from Seinfeld, to identify the real "bad" men by waving his
forefinger sideways.
