War Costs Soar by a Third; Total Could Top $1.4 Trillion
By Noah Shachtman
It's not just the troops that are surging.
War costs are up for American operations in Iraq -- way up, more than
a third higher than last year.
In the first half of this fiscal year, the Defense Department's
"average monthly obligations for contracts and pay is running about
$12 billion per month, well above the $8.7 billion in FY2006," says a
new report, obtained by DANGER ROOM, from the non-partisan
Congressional Research Service.
http://blog.wired.com/defense/files/RL33110.pdf
Additional war costs for the next 10 years could total about $472
billion if troop levels fall to 30,000 by 2010, or $919 billion if
troop levels fall to 70,000 by about 2013.
If these estimates are added to already appropriated amounts, total
funding about $980 billion to $1.4 trillion by 2017.
Meanwhile, Inside Defense reports that "top Pentagon budget and
program officials have directed the military services to prepare
spending proposals to finance Iraq and Afghanistan operations...
through fiscal year 2009, which will span the last days of the Bush
administration and the early months of the next administration."

The COSTS of the war are PROFITS to those who vend goods and services
-- including the PROFITS to Blackwater and the profiteers.
CALL THE COSTS WHAT THEY ARE.

So when you buy something, and someone asks you how much you spent, do you
routinely tell them to rephrase the question as "How much of a profit did
the store make from your purchase?"? That's pretty bizarre.

The costs of the war are $$dollars out of your kids' pockets to
pay for the 50,000 some odd severely crippled vets who will need
expensive care for the next 70 some odd years.
Those vets won't be productive in society and they will incur an
ongoing $$dollar expense to care for.
CALL THE COSTS WHAT THEY ARE

That isn't the cost; it's just what they (Bush and his buddies
in Halliburton, Bechtel, etc) are charging the taxpayers for it. The
first Gulf War cost the US between 60 - 70 billion, and far more bombs
were dropped in that one despite it being of shorter duration than
this one. The price tag isn't justified by what's been expended, so
where is all that money going?

Saudia Arabia. Since after the WTC came down, Halliburton
didn't stick around for long, and moved to Dubai.
