Federal Judge Blocks Curb on Abortion
By Mary MacVean, Times Staff Writer
A federal judge today blocked enforcement of a law banning a
controversial abortion procedure, just one day after President Bush
signed the law.
It was the second restraining order issued against the law in 24
hours.
U.S. District Judge Richard Conway Casey in New York granted a request
for a temporary restraining order against the U.S. Justice Department
made by the National Abortion Federation and seven doctors.
While today's ruling applies only to the plaintiffs, the federation
said it has members in 47 states who perform half of the abortions
nationwide.
On Wednesday, minutes after Bush signed the legislation, a federal
judge in Lincoln, Neb., also issued a temporary restraining order
against the law, but it applied only to four doctors and their staffs.
The impact could extend beyond the state because the doctors are
licensed to practice in several states.
