Object: CBS Caught Promoting Forged Anti-Bush Documents
CBS apparently thinks they had Microsoft Word in 1973:

"Those who doubted whether Iraq or the world would be better off
without Saddam Hussein, and those who believe today that we are not
safer with his capture, don't have the judgment to be President or
the credibility to be elected President."
- John Kerry
"Today marks a tragic milestone in the war in Iraq ... America's
sons and daughters have now given their lives on behalf of their
country, on behalf of freedom, the war on terror."
- John Kerry

"I think Iraq is the most serious and imminent threat
to our country."
- John Edwards
"I'd like to see our troops dispersed through the world
only at the directive of the United Nations."
- John Kerry

"I wish they had a delete button on LexisNexis."

If the documents are forgeries, it is no surprise. Dan Rather is
notoriously shameless and CBS has outdone the other liberal media
networks in attacking the President politically and hoping that he
loses re-election this year.
Who is Rather's assistant, April Oliver or some other "crusader"
(jihadist) journalist openly in favor of "advocacy journalism," where
the message matters more than the facts?

Never let it be said that Dan Blather will let a few facts stand in the
way of a good story.

What's a problem here? G.W. Bush is a certified liear, is he not? And
Americans are hopelessly addicted to lies, are they not? The entire everyday
life in America is saturated with lies of all sorts imaginable. Marketing
lies, political lies, private lies, lies, lies, lies...Liar President for
the Nation of Liars is exactly what this nation wants. And people normally
get what they want.
So who cares if Bush or Dan Rather or whoever else are forging something or
lying about something? Everybody does it for sure, so why bother?

Even the superscript capability which SeeBS referred to in their own defense

Their major source of corroboration says he was lied to during a phone

they never had originals. And lets not get into the presence of kerning and
exact centering of proportional text.
Oh yeah, they refuted the forgery hoax claims -- NOT. Pathetic, really.

The Dallas Morning News
AUSTIN, Texas - The man named in a disputed memo as exerting pressure to
"sugarcoat" George W. Bush's military record left the Texas Air National
Guard a year and a half before the memo supposedly was written, his service
record shows.
An order obtained by The Dallas Morning News shows that Col. Walter "Buck"
Staudt was honorably discharged March 1, 1972. CBS News reported this week
that a memo in which Staudt was described as interfering with officers'
negative evaluations of the future president's service was dated Aug. 18,

You assholes need to learn about the history of the typewriter --
specifically the IBM Selectric with interchangeable type balls -- one of
which was Times New Roman. In fact, I have one sitting on my desk at this
minute. The Selectric was the standard military typewriter from the late
1960's.
What's your next stupid comment?

Is it ALSO proportional?
And is that type face in the standard encyclopedias of
typewriter typefaces?
Hint: the ones with the interchangable balls don't have
proportional.
If yours DOES, the please provide the precise model
number and year of manufacture (serial number would
be nice)

Did your Selectric have 'Smart Quotes'? Didn't think so. Superscript?
Nuh-uh. How about kerning, *****? Lotsa kerning in those 'documents'. And
I wonder how long it took the author of that document to MANUALLY CENTER
PROPORTIONAL TYPE.
Face it, the blogs have ripped you guys a new one. Next canard, please.

I agree with the other points but can you point me to which document
has the "smart quotes" -- I didn't find that feature in the ones I reviewed
(yet).

MSWord uses quotes which are lefthanded at the start of a quote and
righthanded at the end of a quote. The quotes and apostrophes in the
forgeries exhibit this same asymetry.
www.powerlineblog.com has the specific examples, including one forensic
analyst's statement that they were able to create an exact match of the
questionable document using Word's _default _settings.
The presence of font kerning is the smoking gun, however. Typewriters have
no knowledge of what letter is going to be typed next, and no ability to
employ kerning even if they did. Which leads CBS backtracking on their own
investigation of the documents, from their original statement:
As is standard practice at CBS News, each of the documents broadcast on '60
Minutes' was thoroughly investigated by independent experts, and we are
convinced of their authenticity.
to their new, improved one:
CBS verified the authenticity of the documents by talking to individuals who
had seen the documents at the time they were written. These individuals were
close associates of Colonel Jerry Killian and confirm that the documents
reflect his opinions at the time the documents were written.
So what CBS is _now saying is not that the documents are authentic, but that
the opinions they express are authentic, based on the hearsay reports of
anonymous persons alleged to be close associates of Col. Killian, who recall
his views of thirty-two years ago. This is what passes for "authentication"
at the "Tiffany" network.
What, you don't accept hearsay about hearsay?
Finally, (and not font related in any way) dozens of USAF clerks and other
military people have come forward to expose an absolute lack of adherence to
military - style formatting, abbreviation, classification and records -
keeping standards. The still - visible redacted home address of GWB was four
years out of date at the time the memo was supposedly created. A reprimand
would be in the form of a letter, not a memo.
I could go on and on - the point is, according to numerous forensic experts
and military stenographers, the 'documents' are fakes, and not one single
expert has come forward supporting them. Not only are they fakes, they are
extremely amateurish ones.

After I asked the question, I eventually located the docs again
and found that they contain "curved apostrophes" -- I don't believe
there were any actual instances of "smart quotes" but the apostrophe
is the same character as the "close single quote."
Thanks.
