Vice President Cheney thanks returning troops
(Fort Campbell, KY-AP) -
Vice President Cheney told soldiers at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Monday
afternoon that the only way terrorists can win in the Middle East is
if the United States loses its nerve and abandons its mission.
Cheney, welcoming home troops from Iraq, said Fort Campbell soldiers
helped move Iraq forward.
The vice president said terrorists want a base in the Middle East to
launch attacks on the US.
He praised the soldiers for facing some of the toughest conditions in
modern warfare.
Cheney said they served at a very important time in our country.

As a student in the 1960s during the Vietnam War, Cheney received five
student deferments from the military draft.
What is intriguing about this utterly uncharismatic, efficient,
hawkish Vice President is the fact that he never served in the
armed forces.
He says that he was generally supportive of the Vietnam war and
opposed to the demonstrators.
But his hawkishness didn't lead him to volunteer; instead he accepted
student deferments which allowed him to avoid military service.
All Cheney will say is, "As did most other Americans, I watched the
war from afar."
There remains something odd about this hard-line Cold Warrior's
evasion of what would seem to be his patriotic duty.
