Racism still rife in US, says China
March 09 2006 at 11:34AM

Beijing - China on Thursday lashed out against United States criticism
of its human rights record, saying racial discrimination was still rife
in America.
The state council, China's cabinet, denounced the United States (US) for
widespread discrimination against minorities, especially blacks, in its
annual response to the US state department's report on human rights
worldwide.
Blacks are given heavier criminal penalties, arrested more frequently
and are more likely to be targeted for hate crimes, the report said.
It also criticised American troops for brutality at the Abu Ghraib
prison in Iraq and the one at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
'... it is necessary to probe into the human rights abuses in the United
States'
"As in previous years, the state department pointed the finger at human
rights situations in more than 190 countries and regions, including
China, but kept silent on the serious violations of human rights in the
US," the report said.
"To help people realise the true features of this self-styled 'guardian
of human rights,' it is necessary to probe into the human rights abuses
in the United States in 2005."

The response came one day after the state department said the Chinese
government's human rights record "remained poor, and the government
continued to commit numerous and serious abuses."
The US report said there was increased repression in 2005, with a trend
toward "increased harassment, detention, and imprisonment" of people
seen as threats to the Chinese government.
It also mentioned Chinese measures to control more tightly print,
broadcast and electronic media, and censored online content.
The Chinese report also highlighted gun-related crimes, police abuse and
the US poverty level. - Sapa-AP
