China's expenditures for national defense will rise by 21.83 billion
yuan (about 2.6 billion US dollars) this year, 11.6 percent more than
last year, Finance Minister Jin Renqing said in a budget report
Saturday.
The increase is aimed to improve the defensive combat readinessof the
armed forces under hi-tech conditions and to raise the salaries of
army personnel and the pensions for ex-servicemen, theminister said at
the annual session of the national legislature.
China's budgetary military spending for 2003 was 185.3 billion yuan
(about 22.3 billion dollars). The actual defense spending of the year
was not available.
Defense analysts here say that this year's double-digit increase of
defense expenditures, along with an on-going disarmament endeavor
aimed at trimming the 2.5-million-man People's Liberation Army by
200,000 by the year 2005, is in line with thecountry's army building
principle of keeping "fewer but better" troops.

Big deal. In absolute terms China spends about the same as the tiny
island pacifist nation of Japan, and fraction of what US spends.
And the increase, as article points to, are for defenses. Is China
building multiple carrier fleets so she can "project Chinese
sovereignty through the world", and make up WMD lies about others in
order to invade?

Big deal. In absolute terms China spends about the same as the tiny
island pacifist nation of Japan, and fraction of what US spends.

And in the meantime poor Chinese peasants spend US$ 0.60 to celebrate
his Chinese new Year. For him that's indeed a big deal.

And the increase, as article points to, are for defenses. Is China
building multiple carrier fleets so she can "project Chinese
sovereignty through the world", and make up WMD lies about others in
order to invade?

You gotta kidding on the word "defense". All countries have ministries
or dept. of defense but ever heard them of "ministry of offense"?

I once had some photos of a surplus Russian aircraft carrier (Kieve
class?) that had been refurbished, "armed" with dummy missiles and
opened up as a theme park in Southern China. It was sent by a fellow
SMML hobbyist (model ships, from Australia. If Bush wants a "WMD"
target in China that must be it.

But you know what? The sad things is your WMD joke will come true one
of these days. And soon IMO, the Big Giant Arrow On China, aka Pacific
Theater Readiness policy, is going to resurface once again when
America runs out of "enemy". Can't always count on events like 9/11 to
save China's *****.
With friends like this, how can China lose?

Hehe, PRC got that carrier before Bush took office, right?

Count on events like 64 to save CCP's *****.

China will not lose, but CCP can. That's what you never understand. :P
