All that follows below are Noam Chomsky quotations from this excellent
site -
ClassWarz:
"Any dictator would admire the uniformity and obedience of the (U.S.)
media."
"I think we can be reasonably confident that if the American population
had the slightest idea of what is being done in their name, they would
be utterly appalled."
"The rascal multitude are the proper targets of the mass media and a
public education system geared to obedience and training in needed
skills, including the skill of repeating patriotic slogans on timely
occasions."
"Vietnam wasn't a "disastrous mistake" - it was murderous aggression."
"The U.S. is the only country condemned by the World Court for
international terrorism-for "the unlawful use of force" for political
ends."
"Advertising is tax deductible, so we all pay for the privilege of
being manipulated and controlled."
"In much of the world the U.S. is regarded as a leading terrorist
state."
"As long as people are marginalized and distracted [they] have no way
to organize or articulate their sentiments, or even know that others
have these sentiments. People assume that they are the only people with
a crazy idea in their heads. They never hear it from anywhere else.
Nobody's supposed to think that. ... Since there's no way to get
together with other people who share or reinforce that view and help
you articulate it, you feel like an oddity, an oddball. So you just
stay on the side and you don't pay any attention to what's going on.
You look at something else, like the Superbowl."
" The U.S. will not permit constructive programs in its own domains, so
it must ensure that they are destroyed elsewhere to terminate " the
threat of a good example".
" The most effective way to restrict democracy is to transfer
decision-making from the public arena to unaccountable institutions:
kings and princes, priestly castes, military juntas, party
dictatorships, or modern corporations."
"The 'corporatization of America' during the past century [has been] an
attack on democracy."
"The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit
the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within
that spectrum - even encourage the more critical and dissident views.
That gives people the sense that there's free thinking going on, while
all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by
the limits put on the range of the debate."
"The South is assigned a service role: to provide resources, cheap
labor, markets, opportunities for investment and ... export of
pollution."
"The best defense against democracy is to distract people."
"The Orwellian term is "right to work," meaning "effectively illegal to
organize".
" Sports plays a societal role in engendering jingoist and chauvinist
attitudes. They're designed to organize a community to be committed to
their gladiators."
"There's a very committed effort to convert the US into something
resembling a Third World society, where a few people have enormous
wealth and a lot of others have no security."
"If you assume that there is no hope, you guarantee that there will be
no hope. If you assume that there is an instinct for freedom, there are
opportunities to change things, etc., there's a chance to contribute to
the making of a better world. That's your choice."
"... the media serve the interests of state and corporate power, which
are closely interlinked, framing their reporting and analysis in a
manner supportive of established privilege and limiting debate and
discussion accordingly."
"Societies of the North - notably the United States - are taking on
certain Third World aspects. The distribution of privilege and despair
in a society with the enormous advantages of ours is not, of course,
what one finds in Brazil or Mexico. But the tendencies are not hard to
see."

The convoluted Snafu in American politics is so preposterous that no
American could believe the situation US is in, no matter how slowly
you explained it (as the old Polish joke goes); media hasn't said
anything about this, mainstream hasn't even mentioned Mearsheimer &
Walt even though an indepth article from an academic or in a
publication abroad appears almost daily if you put "aipac mearsheimer
walt" into Google Alerts, something like 65,000 articles todate.
It was While Reagan Slept that most of these agent provocateurs
infiltrated the US adminstration. The CIA Christisons paper is a
good corroborating supplement to M & W:
http://sf.indymedia.org/print.php?id=1729867
As for mainstream media obedience it's really to the proIsraeli owners
and advertisers. Jewish editorial personel have their first loyalty to
the "homeland" so restrict themselves to pro-Israeli propaganda, others
really have no option other than pogy. You can think of US as a giant
ant hill with a zionist queen, every critter knows his role.
Canada's media, even the CBC, is no better. Did anyone (make the
mistake and) listen to cross-county hookup last Sunday on the London
terrorist fiasco? Program dwelt almost totally on symptoms of Israel's
terrorism against Palestinians. One teacher expressed the frustration
that her students knew what's really going on but she'd not dare
discuss it to avoid being run out of town by zionist watchdog gangs.
Academic guests on the program just regurgitated their obfuscatory non
sequiturs. Only the very last caller who identified himself as Brian
East and as a former intelligence officer and "security guard" in the
ME, stressed the importance of getting at the root issue of why we are
being attacked. "What's teeing these people off?" But the program time
was up and we couldn't get anymore of the man's insight. Good ol' CBC,
pussyfooting its way through the apocalypse.
There's a guy from NZ posting comments on Aljazeera.com that seem to
suggest it's the $l00-million AIPAC operation in America that's running
the shows both in Israel and domestically in the US. Claims to be
getting his info from taps on AIPAC lines. Newzies have taken a keen
and strongly neutral stance in regard to ME; they imprisoned a couple
of mossaddicks who were skulking about with forged NZ passports.(They
take infringements on their sovereignity seriously, not like our
supplicants in Ottawa). Kind of makes sense since AIPAC supplies the
money and manpower for congressional election campaigns, even un-elects
members who don't show enthusiasm for Israel, writes proIsrael draft
legislation in regard to Hamas, Palestine, etc.,and whose corporate
members fund Think Tanks that provide position papers for politicians
and bureaucrats.
Impeaching Bush is just another fruitless distraction from the antics
of the Great Conniving Manipulator; Bush is nothing more than a wooden
Charley McCarthy on the lap of the zionist ventriloquist. All
impeachment will do is give Americans the fallacious impression that
they've done something, but allow the root cause of Israel stealing
Palestinian land to remain unattended, motivating more Robin Hoods to
bring justice to the world. Tatarewicz
