Clinton's Deficit Reduction Act passed by one vote.
Republicans claimed it would cause a recession if
it passed. Every Republican voted against it. For the
next eight years, the economy boomed. Clinton balanced
the budget. Now Bush has squandered that surplus.
Republicans control all branches of the government,
the economy is anemic, the stock market stinks, the
budget deficit is soaring, millions more people are
now below the poverty level, oil prices are soaring.
What's your excuse?

But first you have to have some understanding of what you are readimg. Thats
the reason that raw numbers are not thrown out for public consumption. Tje
social security fund is shown as part of the general fund and the grpss
recpts reflect this money. The out lays also reflect the SS outlay. However
since during this period the SS fund has been running a surplus the surplus
shown here is really a deficit if you subtract the SS money . The off budget
numbers are also used by the governmen to hide that which they do not wish
to be seen.
These are tricks used by both parties to hide items they do not want the
general public to see. YOUI WILL KINDLY NOTE THAT I SAID BOTH PARTIES USE
THIS SUBTERFUGE.

Why wasn't the budget "balanced" before
there was a Republican majority in the
House? That balanced budget was a farce
anyway. The national debt increased every
year of the Clinton administration.

why did the Bush administration ignore all the warnings? remember

i suggest its because they couldn't be bothered with Osama..... they
were busy planning an Iraqi invasion...... the invasion they had been

And how many more Billions have been spent on the War with Iraq which
started as an expensive hunt for
WMD's that weren't there.
Question: How do you not comply with the UN inspections when you cannot
show them what you DON'T have.
I guess he would have had to make a New WMD since he had none with which he

Government chart talks, ***** walks:
According to the U.S. Treasury
(http://www.ustreas.gov/education/fact-sheets/taxes/fed-debt.html),
here are the debt numbers from Clinton through George W. Bush:
Year Debt Increase Vs. Average since 1940
2005 $6,118,364 1.41% -6.68%
2004 $6,033,583 1.46% -6.63%
2003 $5,946,792 1.57% -6.52%
2002 $5,854,990 1.49% -6.60%
2001 $5,768,957 1.45% -6.64%
2000 $5,686,338 1.43% -6.66%
1999 $5,606,087 2.32% -5.76%
1998 $5,478,711 2.03% -6.06%
1997 $5,369,694 3.62% -4.47%
1996 $5,181,921 5.30% -2.79%
1995 $4,921,005 5.97% -2.12%
1994 $4,643,691 6.72% -1.37%
1993 $4,351,403 8.73% 0.64%
Clinton didn't take office until January 1993 and he left office in
January of 2001. Therefore, I would include 1993 to 2000 in my
analysis of his numbers. During that time, the debt rose, on average,
4.52% per year.
George W. Bush didn't take office until January 2001. Since years
2000-2005 are U.S. Treasury estimaes, we just have to take their word
for it. So, from January 2001 through the projected numbers, the debt
rose, on average, 1.48% per year.
Just looking at the numbers, a 1.48% increase in debt is much better
than a 4.52% increase in debt. (And both are much better than the
double digit growth numbers of the mid to late 80's.)
Note that Clinton did not have any surpluses while he was in office or
the 4 years following. All surpluses were projected but never
materialized.
Of course, these are all lies, damn lies and statistics. Does anyone
truly believe that a single person can have a huge impact on the
economy of the United States? What policy did Clinton enact that
caused such a huge increase in tax revenues from 1996 to 1999? Unless
he invented the Internet ;) And, when the Internet bubble popped, so
did the projected revenues -- and the mythical surplus with it.
Equally, the tax policy of George W. Bush is a drop in the bucket
compared to a 6 trillion dollar economy. Even if we just took his
numbers right off the table, we are talking only a few percentage
points of the entire debt.
So, I hope my lesson is thus: 1) understand what you are telling
people -- especially when you fabricate surplus numbers, 2) do just a
little bit of research instead of blindly repeating what you hear, 3)
don't try to isolate single variables in a very complex system and 4)
don't rely on statistics alone to make an argument -- they can be bent
to say whatever you want.

little bit of research instead of blindly repeating what you hear, 3)
don't try to isolate single variables in a very complex system and 4)
don't rely on statistics alone to make an argument -- they can be bent
to say whatever you want.
Russ
Russ, you are an idiot!
Here are the numbers you used:
End of Fiscal Year Gross Federal Debt
2005 (Estimate) $6,118,364 million
2004 (Estimate) $6,033,583 million
2003 (Estimate) $5,946,792 million
2002 (Estimate) $5,854,990 million
2001 (Estimate) $5,768,957 million
2000 (Estimate) $5,686,338 million
1999 $5,606,087 million
1998 $5,478,711 million
1997 $5,369,694 million
1996 $5,181,921 million
1995 $4,921,005 million
1994 $4,643,691 million
1993 $4,351,403 million
You say:
"Since years 2000-2005 are U.S. Treasury estimaes, we just have to take their word for it."
Why don't you find some current data instead of telling fairy tales.

Well, unless you are clarivoyant, these numbers are not official from
the U.S. Treasury at this time. Never-the-less, my point still stands:
the deficit grew at a higher percentage under Clinton than did George
W. Bush, and, there was never a surplus under Clinton.

Gosh, Russ, you better call the Treasury and tell them their charts are WAY off:
Perhaps you didn't notice, but I gave you a link directly to their
web-site. Not up to date, but it was a cursory search. Forgive me for
not having the absolute best numbers at my personal reference.
http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi?dbname=economic_indicators&docid=32jy04.txt.pdf
Fine, set let's use those numbers. Bush's average increase in deficits
goes to 5.76% (again, compared with Clinton at 4.52%.) So, Bush's
numbers are fairly consistent with those. This is especially in line
with the fact that we have fought two major wars during Bush's tenure.
Never-the-less, you have yet to address my point. And, your continued
name-calling and sarcasm just lends credence to the effect that you
are all blister and no point.
If Clinton's record was so fantastic and Bush's record is so terrible,
explain what exactly is different in their economic policy, Show how,
those policies have had the impact that you imply. Would you even dare
to pull together a cogent answer to these two simple points, or do you
wish to just throw bombs and run away?

My continued name calling? The only name I called you in the last
post was Russ. Previously I called you an idiot, well I'm sorry,
you are just wrong. Happy?
What numbers are you using? The only valid column to use is "Total
Surplus or Deficit". If you use "Gross Federal Debt" then I believe
that would be invalid because it is highly dependent on the cost to
service the debt (the interest rate). In other words, if you have a
weak economy (not good) and interest rates are low because no one
is borrowing, then service costs on the debt are low.
Just look at the column "Total Surplus or Deficit", the numbers
speak for themselves, you don't need a calculator.

You guys crack me up. Neocons now see a strong economy
as "overheated". If the economy was overheated there
would have been inflation. Was there? Nope.
Republicans can't figure out how to manage the economy.
Face it.

I'm all for tax cuts, but if you don't cut spending too
then your "tax cuts" aren't real. If you want to try voodoo
economics, you can't just give the money to rich people,
they aren't going to spend it, and they won't invest if
there is no demand because everybody is broke. Rather, give
the voodoo money to me and my pals. Damn it, we will
patriotically spend the f'in money, guaranteed.
