Colorado in Recession Dumps Bush Tax Cuts |
Colorado voters suspend Taxpayer's Bill of Rights
http://www.startribune.com/stories/587/5703613.html
DENVER — Colorado residents have voted to suspend
their Taxpayer's Bill of Rights, the strictest
government spending limit in the nation, and give
up more than $3 billion in tax refunds to help the
state bounce back from a recession.
Fiscal conservatives were dismayed at the outcome
Tuesday night and worried about its impact on
other states considering similar spending limits.
But supporters said Colorado couldn't afford to vote no,
not with higher education, health care and transportation
already suffering from millions of dollars in budget cuts.
"It means we can join 49 other states recovering
from the recession, we can make up some of the
cuts,'' said Republican Gov. Bill Owens, who stunned
his own party by joining Democrats in crafting
the ballot measure.
The approval of the Colorado referendum allows the
state to keep an estimated $3.7 billion over five
years that otherwise would have been refunded to taxpayers.

Colorado voters suspend Taxpayer's Bill of Rights
http://www.startribune.com/stories/587/5703613.html
DENVER - Colorado residents have voted to suspend
their Taxpayer's Bill of Rights, the strictest
government spending limit in the nation, and give
up more than $3 billion in tax refunds to help the
state bounce back from a recession.
Fiscal conservatives were dismayed at the outcome
Tuesday night and worried about its impact on
other states considering similar spending limits.
But supporters said Colorado couldn't afford to vote no,
not with higher education, health care and =
transportation
already suffering from millions of dollars in budget =
cuts.
"It means we can join 49 other states recovering
from the recession, we can make up some of the
cuts,'' said Republican Gov. Bill Owens, who stunned
his own party by joining Democrats in crafting
the ballot measure.
The approval of the Colorado referendum allows the
state to keep an estimated $3.7 billion over five
years that otherwise would have been refunded to =
taxpayers.

And most people that experience economic downturns cut their =
expenses
rather

sleazy whoremongering bastards. Every single one of them.
And most people recognize that budgets have an absilue minimum. =
That
further
cutting of items like police, fire, prisons, schools, libraries, =
parks,
etc
have negative consequences beyond the small short term beenfits =
of a
few

Colorado voters suspend Taxpayer's Bill of Rights
http://www.startribune.com/stories/587/5703613.html
DENVER - Colorado residents have voted to suspend
their Taxpayer's Bill of Rights, the strictest
government spending limit in the nation, and give
up more than $3 billion in tax refunds to help the
state bounce back from a recession.
Fiscal conservatives were dismayed at the outcome
Tuesday night and worried about its impact on
other states considering similar spending limits.
But supporters said Colorado couldn't afford to vote no,
not with higher education, health care and transportation
already suffering from millions of dollars in budget cuts.

Don't you think that federal tax cuts affect the states? Or all the
federal mandates that are unfunded? It's time to throw the bastards
out and go back to zero-based budgeting. This "oops, I've overspent
and will keep your money" approach just sucks. Hell, California could
cut their school book budget by about 20% and get books in every
student's hand just by going to central book buying by the state with
huge savings due to economies of scale.

What the everyday citizen just don't seem to get is this. When a bureaucrat
or politician has money to spend, they spend it because some of it comes
back to them under the table, or in the form of special favors (ball game
tickets, free dinners, free use of the vacation cabin, car, yacht etc. and
things like that) and when the money pit is cut back, those things are too
and they just won't stand for that.
If anybody needs a lesson in how this really works, just tune into the Jack
Abramoff hearings. There is no such thing as an honest bureaucrat or
politician!
