Conservative Throws Fit Over Poison Beef Sales to Japan |
Gee. Wonder why Japan won't buy any hormone-infested, GMO Feedlot-bloated,
antibiotic-riddled, mad cow untested, American factory farmed beef?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Republican head of the Senate Agriculture Committee
on Tuesday expressed growing frustration at Japan's failure to reopen its
market to U.S. beef shipments and said trade sanctions may be needed.
Tokyo imposed a ban on American beef 19 months ago as a precaution after the
United States diagnosed its first case of mad cow disease. The U.S. cattle
industry says it loses $100 million each month that the Japan market remains
closed.
"Japan's inexplicable lack of response to even consider a move to re-open their
market to U.S. beef will sorely tempt economic trade action against Japan,"
Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, chairman of the panel, said in a statement.
The remarks were among the strongest to date from a senior Republican lawmaker
about Japan's delay in reopening what once was the biggest market for U.S.
beef.
Chambliss did not say what kind of trade sanctions might be considered or when.
The two nations agreed nearly one year ago on a broad framework for resuming
trade of beef from cattle aged 20 months or younger, which are considered to
have the lowest risk of mad cow disease.
But no shipments have occurred because the ban is in the hands of Japan's
independent Food Safety Commission, which has been studying the trade issue.

Well, we could just implement a program to test all our cows. That would
help ensure the beef supply is 100% safe for domestic consumption, too.
Sort of like building strong levees, it's insurance against disaster. I
mean, if we had a real mad cow breakout, that would cause an awful lot of
damage and people could die.
But I guess it's just better to rant at the Japanese.

Ironically, one U.S. company managed to get Japan to agree to drop the ban
for them, as long as they did what Japan does and test every single cow that
is slaughtered for Mad Cow Disease. However, the USDA put the kibbosh on
this, as they control all centralized testing of Mad Cow Disease, and have
threatened to prosecute any manufacturer who tries to test their own beef.
Why? Apparently, the USDA, which only tests 1% of all beef for Mad Cow
Disease, considers it an "unfair market practice," as it gives an "unfair"
economic advantage to companies who are able to afford the testing. Yeah,
its really unfair when companies actually want to ensure public safety.

Well, it looks like the conservative lassais faire "Free market" dies like a
rat in a sausage grinder when a private manufacturer decides to test cows
for Mad Cow Disease. Mad Cow Disease is a very dangerous disease, The USDA
tests all of 1% of cows for it, and they don't want anybody else even
looking for it. Why would that be? Why the ***** would definitely "clean"
cows be an "unfair advantage" over 99% untested ones unless the USDA is
scared (or already knows) that there is a lot more Mad Cow Disease out there
than their rather casual looking methods are finding.
