Constitution Amendment Protecting American Flag Likely
The Senate will debate the "Flag Protection Amendment" at the end of June.
If it passes -- this constitutional amendment will give one of the Nation's
"proudest and most treasured symbols the protection it deserves" said Senate
Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN).
Polls have shown that roughly 80% of the American people want to vote on the
right to protect the flag. In addition, all 50 state legislatures have
passed resolutions asking Congress to pass an amendment -- to be sent back
to the states for debate and ratification, according to the Republican
National Committee.
"Clearly, the American people have spoken. It's time for the Senate to
listen," said Frist.
"That flag represents all that we are -- all that we stand for. Freedom.
Liberty. It represents so much to so many. And I believe we have a moral
obligation to rise as a body and declare that it is wrong to burn the flag
of the United States of America," he said.

Young is definitely an idiot and Frist is either an idiot or is cynically
trying to get the idiot vote, or is trying to divert attention from all
the failures of the Bush administration.
1. Flag burning is not a real problem. Have you ever seen it
happen? (Other countries don't count - our laws don't apply
there.)
2. You can simply use fire regulations to stop it in the usual
public venues. After all, it is reasonable to not allow
impromptu bonfires in front of city hall. And if it is out
of sight, what's the point?
3. Can Pixar burn a flag via computer animation? Would a
disclaimer that "no real flags were actually burned" get
the special effects guys off the hook?
4. What happens if you make something that looks like an
American flag but has one extra star and burn that? It
isn't a real flag, so is that OK? Figure on the U.S.
spending several million dollars as such cases meander
through the courts as every conceivable variation is tried.
Wouldn't it be better to spend that money trying to catch
Osama?
5. What happens if you burn a white flag, but use a laser
projection system with adaptive optics to project an image
of an American flag on it? Would you be in trouble if it
looks like a real American flag, even though it isn't?
6. What happens when Silvester Stalone decides to make his
next Rambo movie? A group of Middle Eastern extremists
tie him up in public and threaten to torture him if he
does not burn an American flag. Naturally he refuses,
so they wire him with electrodes and zap him, bulging
muscles and all, as they burn a flag in front of his
face. He is so enraged that he breaks his bonds, grabs
a sword, and singlehandedly beheads 1000 people as one
after the other (but never two at once) try to kill the
infidel. Can he make this movie? Would it be OK if the
flag was burned off screen? Can they burn it in another
country? Would anyone be so daft as to actually see
this movie? Would J. Young see it? (No doubt impressed
by the bulging muscles. :-))
7. Apparently the proper way of disposing of a worn out
American flag is to respectfully burn it so it doesn't
end up ignominiously in some landfill. Exactly what
do you have to do to be sufficiently respectful to stay
out of jail?
Enquiring minds want to know, but my opinion is "don't fix it if
it isn't broken."

Precisely the points I've tried to make over the years. It's a totally
unenforceable proposition with so many loopholes as to make it laughable.
With the billions, literally, of flags and flag decorated items that
exist in the US today, to prevent any descrations, real or unintended,
would consume billions of dollars and countless hours of time. For what?
But, you know what? I hope it passes so we can start making a mockery of
the fools who wanted it. We can clog the jails and the courts with
complaints, real and imagined, everytime a security gaurd with a flag on
his uniform shirt spills some taco sauce on it eating at the mall food
court, or someone improperly disposes of a book, video tape, DVD or any
other item depicting the flag. Hey, what if I put a video of a waving
flag on TV and then blow up the TV? My GOD!! What if I'm watching a
waving flag on TV and turn it off?? Will I go to jail?? What if I turn it
off in protest?? What if I blow my nose on it instead of burning it? Or
crap on it? Does any of that count?? A flag burning amendment is such a
joke.

Probably not. You would kill the hungry, greedy, parasitic little worms

The second amendment secures individuals the right to possess arms to
defend their persons and to protect against attack (whether private or
GOVERMENTAL, and a collective right (assertable by individuals) to
possess arms for the purpose of militia service.
Hmmmm !

That would be a mere shadow of freedom. The test of its substance is
the right to differ as to things that touch the heart of the existing
order." - Robert Jackson
By the way, most (I hope) Americans find the First Amendment a much
more cherished symbol than the flag. So it's not ok to desecrate it

As in only one?

You forgot that he wants one to ban gay marriage too.

A lie. It's already not a reality

No, gay marriage is legal in the Commonwealth of Massachusettes.

And another that bans abortion.

Another lie. Roe v Wade established a right that did not previously exist. I
believe the Constitution only needs proper interpretation on that subject.

The Court disagrees, and upheld their view recently.
The Court decides what rights are guaranteed in the Constitution, not your
fuindamentalist friends...at least for now....

No, gay marriage is legal in the Commonwealth of Massachusettes.

And Hawaii recognizes gay marriage, although it does not (yet) issue that
type of marriage license itself

In article <4PPPf.68912$kp3.11843@fed1read03>,

says...

And another that gets rid of the first.

That's exactly what this proposed amendment will start to do if/when it
passes. Then the US will no longer be worth protecting.

Once you get the public used to changing the Constitution, it gets progressively easier to do it again and
again.....

The Republicans have this desire to tweak and bend the US Constitution to
enshrine their own prejudices and fears...
Using an amendment to restrict expression, however abhorrent that expression is,
is still a gross misuse of the document.
It should be noted that the only two presidents impeached were democrats,
impeached by republican congresses, both to remove inconvienient
presidents.....both attempts saw the presidents involved found "not guilty"

That would be the "prejudices and fears" of ~80% of the American
people in this case, I'm afraid. It's a funny thing how advocates of
"perfect freedom" never seem to quite grasp the concept of
"responsibility", as if these are two different, unrelated things. If
you want freedom of speech in general you have to accept that people
who yell "FIRE" in a crowded theater are going to go to jail anyway..
If you want freedom then those who abuse the privileges of freedom
have to be punished or the people WILL chuck the whole "freedom" thing
as a bad idea. And you along with it.
