Object: Corrupt Governor's Ties To The Bush Family Still Strong
In another dark hour, this time involving scandals and lies, the
question arises:
Will the Bush family come to Rowland's political rescue?
The Bushes, known for their loyalty, have not abandoned Rowland as he
faces an FBI investigation and possible impeachment for ethical lapses
after admitting that he lied about receiving gifts from politically
connected contractors at his vacation cottage on Bantam Lake in
Litchfield.
Rowland, who keeps pictures of the current president in his Capitol
office, is publicly focused on fighting impeachment and remaining in
his job until the end of his term, in January 2007.
Despite polls showing only 10 percent of the state's registered voters
now believe he is honest, Rowland steadfastly intends to finish his
term.
But other insiders say the Bush family could use its extensive
contacts to help Rowland outside of politics, such as helping to
create a company in the private sector with Rowland as the chief
executive.
"If there's going to be an exit strategy, there will be one of these
multimillionaires in Greenwich to take care of Rowland," a longtime
Rowland friend said.
"That's how this whole thing ends. I think the Bush family could help
because of their contacts. The exit strategy I see is exactly that."
With Rowland still determined to stay in office, though, Republicans
said the Bush family has not made any definitive moves to line up a
job in the immediate future.
The Bush family loyalty is a trait that has sometimes prompted
political fire against the family.
During the first Bush presidency, Bush remained loyal to Vice
President Dan Quayle and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas -
despite raging national controversies over both.
Bush also supported a series of friends, such as then-presidential
chief of staff John Sununu, in bruising internal battles because he
had difficulty firing virtually anyone he had appointed.
The family also stood solidly behind Neil Bush the savings and loan
crisis.
Longtime Republicans in Connecticut cite numerous examples of the
Bush-Rowland relationship during the past 17 years.
Rowland himself has said the Bush family treats him like a son.

Rowland's Ties To Bush Family Still Strong
By CHRISTOPHER KEATING, Capitol Bureau Chief
It was one of the darkest times of young John Rowland's political
life.
It was November 1990, and the 33-year-old Rowland had just lost his
first bid for governor in a hard-fought battle against bitter rival
Lowell P. Weicker - his first defeat in an otherwise skyrocketing
political career.

Suddenly, the phone rang.
It was the president of the United States, his friend, George H.W.
Bush.
John, I'm sorry about your loss, said Bush, who was in the middle of
his four-year term. Why don't you come down to Washington to work for
the administration?
Rowland, who once told the story to a reporter, eventually declined
politely, saying he wanted to finish his third term as a member of the
U.S. House and did not want a job in Washington.
Instead, Rowland struck out on his own, launching a consulting
business - a new and, it would turn out, lucrative career - and then,
four years later, winning the job he really wanted: governor of
Connecticut.

Rowland apparently has the kind of character the Bush family
recognizes and admires.

Might be fun to create a web page with all the senators mentioned,
with a red dot beside each one for a scandal. Order them by the
number of dots. You can click the dot to get details on the scandal.
