A Hypocrisy Score Card
The Democrats spent $14.6 million of income tax
dollars so John Kerry could "report for duty." Now
the Republicans are spending $14.6 million more could
reminisce about the good old days - you know, the
Korean War and September 11th.
They call them political conventions. They're more
like bad skits from Saturday Night Live.
Yesterday one of the cable news networks did a story
on the tens of millions of dollars in corporate
sponsorships that pay for these conventions. But the
story didn't mention that the conventions also
receive tens of millions in tax funding. Nor did the
story mention that the original justification for
funding the conventions with tax dollars was to avoid
having special interests pay for them.
The Republicans and Democrats both love to talk about
values and character, but what they do speaks so much
louder than what they say.
We're fighting a debatable war in Iraq, but Kerry and
Bush aren't debating about that war. They're debating
Vietnam, a war that ended 30 years ago. Bush lied
(either to himself, or to us) about the reasons for
invading Iraq one year ago, but the media is fixated
about whether Kerry lied about a few medals three
decades ago. The concern of the moment is whether
Kerry was in Cambodia in 1969, but no one says a word
about where Osama bin Laden is right now.
Bush says Kerry flip-flops. He's right. Kerry does.
And so does Bush.
* In 2000, Bush promised in his inaugural address not
to engage in nation building. But what are we
doing in Iraq right now? Nation building.
* In 2000, Bush promised to support free trade, then
signed huge protectionist tariffs. Bush swore
an oath to protect and defend the Constitution,
then signed into law campaign finance
regulations that he admitted were
unconstitutional. Flip-flop. Flip-flop.
And it goes on . . .
Now, George Bush and John McCain agree that the way
to stop Republican attack ads against Kerry is to
make them illegal - MORE CAMPAIGN FINANCE REGULATION!
Mind you, Bush doesn't disown the ads themselves.
Apparently, it's free speech he objects to, and not
the content of that speech.
Enough complaining - I want to do something about it;
not just keep score. I want to do something positive.
And I hope you do too.
We've updated our online campaign to support HR 344,
a bill that would end tax funding for political
conventions. Please go there right now
www.DownsizeDC.org
and send a message to Congress to support this
legislation. If you've done this before, please do it
again. Bombard them with messages until they get the
point.
We've also updated our campaign on the new FCC
censorship law. Now we're seeking a repeal of that
law. While you're visiting
www.DownsizeDC.org
send another message on this issue too. Repetition
works. While they flip-flop, we focus. Downsize DC.
Tomorrow, we plan to announce a special surprise
campaign. It's clever. We know you'll appreciate it.
Next up are the Presidential debates. Of course, they
won't _debate_ anything. Bush and Kerry are political
clones - twin worshipers at the altar of the state.
They're mirror image flip-floppers. But there is
hope.
A recent court decision says the debates as currently
structured violate the law. So the structure of the
debates will have to change in order to comply with
the law. And we intend to take advantage of this.
We are mounting a campaign to bombard Congress, the
Debates Commission, and the Federal Election
Commission, with a call to allow in all candidates
appearing on enough ballots to have a chance to win.
This would give us a real debate. We'll support this
campaign with radio ads and media interviews. We have
to prepare, but we need your help. It will cost about
$5,000 to do the advance work, including the ad
production and contacting the media. So while you're
at
www.DownsizeDC.org
please make a contribution to support this new
campaign.
More soon.
