Definition of 'Civil War' |
"Sustained military combat, primarily internal, resulting in at least
1,000 battle-deaths per year, pitting central government forces
against an insurgent force capable of effective resistance, determined
by the latter's ability to inflict upon the government forces at least
5 percent of the fatalities that the insurgents sustain." (Errol A.
Henderson and J. David Singer, "Civil War in the Post-Colonial World,
1946-92," Journal of Peace Research, Vol. 37, No. 3, May 2000.)
Sounds about like Iraq these days, don't it

That's fine. But who considers the present Iraqi "government" to be
legitimate?

I see the word 'insurgents' is in the definition, but as far as the
legitimacy of their government, hmm...
Well, the rest of the definition fits...the numbers being killed
annually, the kind of conflict it seems to be about, etc
As far as it being against a legitimate government, well, it is more
like a struggle against the current powers that be I guess
.

There is a revolt in some parts of Iraq which the military hope to
crush soon.

Wow. That's like so simply optimistic. Almost like 'seems too easy &
too good to be true' optimistic from what the situation is like over
there. Wow.
