A barrage of rockets fired from donkey carts yesterday
hit hotels used by American workers and foreign
journalists as well as the oil ministry in central
Baghdad.

At least one person was injured as rocket-propelled
grenades struck the Palestine and Sheraton hotels in
the heavily guarded area but nobody was injured in the
blasts at the oil ministry.
Iraqi police said two donkey carts carrying rocket
launchers were found near the hotels and the ministry.
Two more carts loaded with dozens of rockets were
reported to have been found near the Italian embassy.
They were attached to timers but had not been fired.
At the Palestine Hotel, one of the rockets left a hole
in the wall of a 16th-floor room.
Anthony Bateman, a contractor from Wroxham, Norfolk,
was staying in the room next door. "I was in the
bathroom when I heard a huge explosion and the sound of
splintering glass," he said. "The nose cone from one of
the missiles had landed on my balcony and blown all the
windows out."
The atttacks "show the variety as the insurgents try
to get one step ahead of us", said Colonel Brad May, a
US military spokesman. "It's certain that you'd have
the element of surprise by using a donkey cart."
