already stepping on people in my home town.

Student says she had to give up Bush tickets

the Bush event were revoked because of the stickers on her car.
An Abraham Lincoln High School student said she was forced to give up
her tickets for the President Bush event Monday after waiting four hours
in line to get them.
Allison Plummer, 17, a senior at the school, said she had just got into
her car to leave when a woman, allegedly from the ticket office,
demanded the tickets back after apparently noticing Democratic Party
stickers on Plummer's car.
"I was very took the tickets away, very flustered," Plummer said. "She
was very demanding."
Plummer went to the former Valentino's Restaurant where the tickets were
being distributed around 2 p.m. Thursday and finally got hers around 6
p.m. Plummer got two tickets when she told the officials there she
supported Bush. After getting the tickets, she and a friend got into her
car to leave.

"I see her in my rear view mirror and she's looking at the back of my
car," Plummer said. "Once I get the car started, she comes up to my
window and knocks on it and tells me to roll my window down. When I
rolled my window down, she told me to give back the tickets.
When Plummer asked why, the lady said there were two bumper stickers on
the car that were not pro-Bush, and Plummer gave the tickets back, she
said.
One of the bumper stickers was for the Democratic Party ticket of John
Kerry and John Edwards. The other sticker was an anti-Bush comment,
"Bring back Monica Lewinski."
The car is actually her parents, who are Democrats, and she herself
hasn't yet registered to vote.
"I had no intention to disrespect the president," Plummer said. "I just
wanted to see my president. I was just going to watch him and listen to
the other point of view."
Pottawattamie County Republican chairman Mark Rater said these things
can happen in a political campaign.
"I wasn't allowed to go to an (Democrat) Al Gore event four years ago,
they wouldn't let me in," he said. "I understand. I've been there.
That's part of the game. This is a Republican Party function."
Her friend, fellow A.L. student Allison Brown, had even less luck. Brown
waited five hours and couldn't get a ticket after telling the officials
she was undecided on supporting Bush.
"I said, 'Wouldn't he want undecided voters to hear what he's going to
say?' and they said, 'That's what TV is for,'" Brown said. "He's the
president, and he's coming to a swing state; and they're not allowing
undecided voters to hear him."
When people watch an event like this on television, all they get are
five-second sound bites of cheering crowds in the background, Brown
said.
Dan Ronayne, spokesperson for the Bush/Cheney campaign, said events such
as the upcoming presidential visit become issues of supply and demand
when tickets are concerned.
"We have over 20,000 volunteers working to help his reelection here in
Iowa," he said. "The first thing that we want to do, is to allow those
volunteers to hear the president thank them for their hard work. And
motivate them to continue to the finish line. These events are also
opportunities for the President to speak to undecided voters, but
someone who has shown their allegiance via pro-Kerry and anti-Bush
bumper stickers on their car has probably left the undecided

OMAHA, Neb. -- President George W. Bush will visit Council Bluffs on
Monday, but many people are being told they're not welcome.
Two high school seniors wanted a chance to see Bush in person. They
can't vote, but waited in line for more than four hours to get tickets.
"They said, 'If you could register, would you register Republican?'"
said Allison Brown, 17, and a high school senior, recounting her
experience when she got to the front of the line. "I said I'd register
Democrat. 'Would you vote for Bush?' I'm undecided. 'I can't give you
tickets.'"
Brown said the message from Republicans doesn't make sense to her.
"Wouldn't he want undecided voters there to sway them? They said that's
what TV and debates are for," Brown said.
Brown's friend -- Allison Plummer -- is undecided, too. She told the
Bush supporters that she would vote for the president if she could.
Plummer got tickets, but not for long. The supporters noticed a
Kerry-Edwards bumper sticker on her parent's car.
"She came up to my window and demanded the tickets back," Plummer said.
Republicans say Monday's event is not an official White House visit and
is not supported by tax dollars.
"This is a rally around the election, reaching out to Republicans and to
people who support the president, to encourage them to get out and
vote," said Nebraska Republican Chair David Kramer. "There have be other
opportunities. The president was here 1 1/2 years ago, and there were
thousands of tickets for that event and no questions asked. If you
wanted to go, you could get a ticket."
Another concern is that non-supporters might heckle or try to distract
the president. Plummer and Brown said they just wanted to see Bush.
Local Democrats said John Kerry visits are open to the public, and when
Sen. John Edwards came to Council Bluffs last week, there were no
restrictions on who could attend the rally.
