A Georgia Tech student has been in federal custody
for nearly a month, his family says.
Syed Haris Ahmed, a 21-year-old mechanical engineering
major, was arrested by the FBI on March 23, according
to his father, Syed Riaz Ahmed.
A spokesman for the FBI's Atlanta office would not
comment on the case Wednesday, but the student's
family said he is innocent of wrongdoing.
The Associated Press, citing a report by WAGA-TV,
said the student was apparently accused of planning
terrorist activity.
Syed Riaz Ahmed said Wednesday that he learned of
his son's arrest when he returned to the United States
from a trip to Pakistan to visit relatives.
A computer science professor at North Georgia College,
Syed Riaz Ahmed said he was questioned by
authorities at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport
on March 26.
He said he granted a request from federal agents for
permission to search the family's home near the
Forsyth-Dawson county line.
"I allowed them to come to the house because I was at
the airport and they tried to pressure me," he said.
"They asked me so many questions."
Agents confiscated computer hard drives and data CDs
from his son's room, he said.
Syed Riaz Ahmed said his son, who was born in Pakistan
and graduated from Dawson County High School,
became a U.S. citizen three years ago.
The U.S. Marshal's office confirmed that Syed Haris Ahmed
is in custody, but said the case is sealed.
"The last time we saw him, he was in the Roswell city
detention center," Syed Riaz Ahmed said.

Let's see, travel to Pakistan, start digging deeper into Islam,
videotape a building...nah, I don't see anything suspicious here.
