Former Mitt PAC worker jailed
Sex offender grilled in baby’s death

A former operative for GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has been
locked up on probation violations and questioned in connection with
the murder of a 7-month-old baby girl in Iowa, the Herald has learned.
Matthew Elliott, who worked as a consultant for Romney’s Commonwealth
political action committee, was arrested Monday night at the Des
Moines, Iowa, home where the baby died. An autopsy ruled the death a
homicide, police said.
West Des Moines police Lt. Jeff Miller said no suspects have been
named in the baby’s killing, but Elliott has been questioned in
connection with her death. Elliott has not been charged.
“He was staying at the residence when the murder occurred,” Miller
told the Herald.
“When emergency workers arrived, he was not at the house. We wanted to
talk to him since his name came up.”
Elliott, 26, is a registered sex offender who was convicted in Iowa in
October 2006 of exploiting a minor, according to public records.
His rap sheet in Iowa also includes charges of escaping from
authorities and violating the state’s sex offender registry, records
show.
He is being held in Polk County jail on three probation violations.
A law enforcement source said the escape charge stems from an incident
in July 2007 when Elliott allegedly cut off an electronic monitoring
bracelet he was under court order to wear.
He has also been charged with violating a probation condition that
barred him from living within 2,000 feet of a school or day care.
An Iowa Republican Party operative and Drake University graduate,
Elliott joined Romney’s Commonwealth PAC in early 2006 but left after
only a few weeks, reportedly to run for the Iowa state Legislature.
Romney’s Commonwealth PAC had chapters in several states and was set
up to raise money for local Republicans.
The PAC was instrumental in helping build Romney’s GOP network as he
ramped up his presidential bid.
