Bass aide resigns after ex-girlfriend's complaint

A longtime aide to former U.S. Rep. Charlie Bass has resigned his post
at a Republican lobby in Washington, D.C., after an ex-girlfriend
accused him of trashing her apartment.
Tad Furtado was a policy aide on Bass' payroll at the Republican Main
Street Partnership, a group of fiscally conservative lawmakers.
Bass, the group's president and CEO, said he advised Furtado to step
down last Tuesday, the same day he learned of the former girlfriend's
allegations.
Her complaint, on file in D.C. Superior Court, includes allegations
that Furtado knifed every piece of furniture in her home, dumped
vacation photos in the toilet and poured Tabasco sauce in her
underwear drawer.
"The nature of the complaint, I think, is very serious, and it's not
the kind of standard I expect from anybody who is working for me,"
Bass said yesterday.
Furtado's resignation was his second in eight months, both from
positions under Bass.
Last September, he was forced to quit his job as policy director in
Bass' congressional office after admitting he used a government
computer to post misleading messages on liberal blogs.
Bass lost his bid for reelection in November.
He hired Furtado when he took the reigns at the Main Street
Partnership in January.
"The Republican Main Street Partnership is very different from the
U.S. Congress," Bass said.
"Tad was an extremely able policy analyst, and I thought it was fair
to give him a second chance. Obviously, under the circumstances, I
made a mistake."
Furtado, 36, spent eight years in Bass' congressional office.
At the time of his resignation, he was the office's number-two
staffer.
A complaint against Furtado, first reported by the Beltway publication
CQ Weekly, was filed last month by Furtado's ex-girlfriend, Renee
Howell Kevelighan.
Kevelighan, 32, is chief of staff to U.S. Rep. Mark Souder, an Indiana
Republican.
In her complaint, Kevelighan claims her apartment was thoroughly
vandalized some time around April 16, about a month after she and
Furtado broke off their 10-month relationship.
Among other charges, she claims Furtado poured bleach on her clothes,
slashed her wedding dress and stuffed her washer and dryer with beer,
yogurt, eggs and olives.
Also, he allegedly left broken bottles in her refrigerator and
shattered glass on the floor.
A superior court judge issued a temporary restraining order April 17.
Both parties are scheduled to appear in court May 15.
Calls to Furtado and Kevelighan were not returned yesterday.
New Hampshire bloggers helped force Furtado's resignation from Bass'
congressional office last fall when they revealed a government
computer was the source of several pro-Bass postings on liberal Web
sites.
Bass later identified Furtado as the author of those messages.
