Jury convicts on manslaughter charge in 4-year-old's death

The Dorchester foster mother convicted of involuntary manslaughter in
the beating death of a 4-year-old boy will spend the next two-and-a-half
weeks in jail until sentenced by a Suffolk judge.
Corinne Stephen, 26, was found guilty Friday by a jury that spent two
days considering evidence of her role in the 2005 death of Dontel Jeffers.
Assistant District Attorney David Deakin told the jury that Jeffers'
injuries - bruising, ligature marks, crushing damage to his throat, a
black eye, and a perforated bowel - were Stephen's responsibility,
regardless of whether she or someone else in her home inflicted the damage.
Suffolk County District Attorney called the jury's apparent agreement
with that argument "justice."
"They found that this defendant, through her action or inaction, was
criminally responsible for Dontel's death, and they held her
accountable," he said.
Defense attorney John Palmer said Stephen tried to save her son by
taking him to Caritas Carney Hospital the night he died - and that her
nursing training and military background constituted a character
opposite that of a child abuser.
Conviction of involuntary manslaughter in Massachusetts carries a
possible 20-year sentence.

Imagine that, 6.4 children die at the hands of the very agencies that
are supposed to protect them and only 1.5 at the hands of parents per
100,000 children. CPS perpetrates more abuse, neglect, and sexual abuse
and kills more children then parents in the United States. If the
citizens of this country hold CPS to the same standards that they hold
parents too. No judge should ever put another child in the hands of ANY
government agency because CPS nationwide is guilty of more harm and
death than any human being combined. CPS nationwide is guilty of more
human rights violations and deaths of children then the homes from which
they were removed. When are the judges going to wake up and see that
they are sending children to their death and a life of abuse when
children are removed from safe homes based on the mere opinion of a
bunch of social workers.
