telling him to do, bears little relation to what francophones expect. The

conference with George.
Criticize Harper - it's not clear to me that francophones asked him to speak
French at international press conferences.

My guess would be that French speakers in Quebec are probably as mystified
by the perceived need of politicians to display their ignorance in both
official languages as English speakers in the Maritimes, Ontario, the
Prairies or the Left Coast are. I can't actually speak for the typical
francophone, seeing as how I'm not one, but I'd figure that it doesn't
disturb the composure of your average Quebecois (or Quebecoise) to have his
or her national leader talk to an English audience in English.
While the original point is valid, I'd agree with the French-speaking
respondents that Quebec is hardly to blame for this behaviour.
On a related note, it pisses me off when TV and radio has translators break
in to overlay what a politico is saying in another language. As a matter of
fact, my father gets riled up about this too. Both of us are somewhat
capable of understanding French, and if a speaker is using French we'd
prefer to hear the original, rather than having a translation delivered to

There was at least two occasions during the interviews where the reporter
specifically requested a response in French and in English from Harper,
soundbytes for the Francophone media and the English media alike.
I have seen times where Bush has responded in Spanish, which he speaks
fluently.
