FROM PROGRAMME PRODUCER MARCUS HERBERT
Hello,
Gavin Esler is out of the office talking to Thabo Mbeki, so as
the producer of tonight's programme, let me tell you about the items we're
working on.
The South African President is in Britain to attend a
Progressive Governance summit, hosted by Tony Blair. They've been
discussing, amongst other things, the notion that the international
community has a right to intervene in failing states. In the context of
Zimbabwe, that's a controversial issue for Thabo Mbeki, whose critics accuse
him of being too soft on Robert Mugabe. In a rare British television
interview, we'll be putting those criticisms to Mr Mbeki, and discussing his
controversial position on HIV treatment.
We have another fascinating interview on the programme tonight.
We'll be talking to Douglas Feith, Head of Policy at the Pentagon - one of
Donald Rumsfeld's closest advisors and a man normally reluctant to talk to
the media. But the White House is under pressure about the situation in
post-war Iraq, and embarrassing revelations over pre-war intelligence. Both
issues fall under Mr Feith's responsibility.
Meanwhile from Baghdad, we give you The Private Life of the
Saddam Regime. We have the first access to remarkable footage of Saddam
relaxing in opulence with his family; but also, in contrast, shocking videos
of what went on behind the closed doors of his security police.
And back home, Dame Janet Smith has published the latest
findings of her inquiry into Britain's worst serial killer, Harold Shipman.
Her report on Greater Manchester Police's investigation is measured,
detailed, and scathing. She says a properly directed investigation would
probably have saved the lives of Shipman's last three victims. And her calls
for reform of the coroner system amount to a shake up far more radical than
anything yet proposed by the Government. We'll be discussing whether the
right lessons have yet been learnt from the Shipman killings.
Finally, one consequence of Gavin's absence is that he won't be
able to share any of his jokes with you today. I know you'll be heartbroken.
We might let him tell one on the programme.
Please watch and find out.
