Fox News Channel bombs with comedy show
By Hal Boedeker
Jon Stewart knows how to do slashing comical commentary.
He weighs in on what's happening, such as the media's bizarre coverage
of Anna Nicole Smith's death.
David Letterman knows how to do slashing comical commentary.
He takes President Bush's awkward speeches and contrasts them with the
lasting words of John F. Kennedy and Franklin Roosevelt.
Fox News Channel does not know how to do slashing comical commentary.
The channel debuts "The 1/2 Hour News Hour" at 10 p.m. Sunday and
repeats it at 10 p.m. Feb. 25.
This show was meant to be a conservative version of "The Daily Show."
It is a botch.
"The 1/2 Hour News Hour" does not comment on what is happening;
it simply takes swipes at people.
These people include Howard Dean, Hillary Clinton, Dennis Kucinich,
Barack Obama and Ed Begley Jr. Other joke topics are the ACLU, Time
magazine, children's books and global warming.
Laughter, of an awfully canned variety, greets all the gags.
Nothing happening on screen justifies these outbursts.
Hey, I'm all for a good dig at the high and the mighty.
But these satirists fall short of hitting their targets with wit,
timeliness or punch.
Which raises the point:
What is a comedy show doing on a news channel?
"The 1/2 Hour News Hour" was developed by Joel Surnow, who has given
the world many minutes of entertainment through "24."
On the basis of the premiere, Surnow should stick to political
thrillers.
At the top, Rush Limbaugh puts in a cameo as the U.S. president (the
year is 2009);
Ann Coulter drops in as his vice president.
Then they disappear, a smart move.
Fox News Channel will offer a second episode at 10 p.m. March 4.
If we're lucky, we'll never hear of this dreadful show again.

Wow, that was pretty bad. The ideas are there, though. I think we
all know that right-wingers suck at satire, but, hey, give them credit
for trying. You never know, this type of sense of humor may actually
cause some of the writers to THINK for once in their lives.
If you're an honest person you know that the folks on the far left
are just as stupid, they just hide it better. The fact is, both sides
need each other to exist. Without one, the other has nothing to
insecurely compare itself to.

I am not sure why there is a lack of good right-wing humor at all.
You would figure the extremes would end up being a good target for
humor, but few pull it off. Actually, I think William F Buckley did
some humor pieces, and probably the best approach for someone
conservative is to make fun of themselves, while lampooning everything
else.

Yep, I bet you're right. But they don't have an original idea to save
their lives. All they do is try to copy Stewart from the other side.
It has to be more than that. And, BTW, right-wing readers, Stewart
also makes fun of Democrats.

The "½ Hour News Hour" on Faux is a sign of desperation by Roger Ailes
as Faux has started its irreversible sliding downhill in the Arbitron
and Nielson cable ratings. MSNBC is coming up fast (mostly off the
back of Keith Olbermann), CNN is slowly coming up and Faux is down
again...third quarter in a row. The lunatic rightards in here, of
course, will deny this and point to right-skewed "surveys" that show
the opposite....just as they did prior to their wipeout in Congress
last November. The malable "cattle voters" have had enough of right
wingerism, leaving only the whackoids like the Flush Limpdick/Bill
O'Rightly crowd to support them...and their numbers are FAR smaller
than all the rightards would have everyone believe. It's the same old
story, as used by the Moral Minority and "Fat Pat" Robertson's
religious scams...tell a lie often enough, and stupid people will not
only believe it, but will give you lots of dough!
Watch for more desperate moves as Faux continues to slide and the "old
man," Rupert Murdoch, starts fuming more and more about a "communist
plot."

Subtle point Fox seems to be missing:
Comedy Central is a COMEDY channel with a show about the news.
Fox News pretends to be a NEWS station.
Such a show BRINGS UP CC. Such a show BRINGS DOWN Fox.
Like they care.
