The people of Massachusetts have a sense of humor.
We’re used to being made fun of.
The accent. George McGovern - we were the only ones, remember.
Even the People’s Republic of Massachusetts, as some red-state folk
might say.
But making references to the KKK in describing the politics of this
state is going too far.
‘‘Today when most of the country thinks of who controls Massachusetts,
I think the modern day KKK comes to mind - the Kennedy, Kerry Klan,’’
said a New York lawyer who was introducing Gov. Mitt Romney at a
luncheon of the Federalist Society on Thursday in Washington.
The Federalist Society has a high-toned name and a membership with
lots of pedigrees, including the new Chief Justice of the Supreme
Court, John Roberts Jr., and top White House aides.
But apparently the group goes for low-brow humor.
It is not politically correct to say there is no place for humor where
the Ku Klux Klan is concerned.
The KKK stands for racism and violence at its worst.
When people think KKK, they think men covered in sheets, celebrating a
cross burning or lynching.
To apply such imagery to the senators from Massachusetts is
despicable.
Romney disassociated himself from the remark, but the speaker, Gerald
Walpin, said he had no regrets over his words.
Certain people in Massachusetts don’t have a sense of humor, said
Walpin.
Federalist Society members pride themselves on knowing American
history.
But it’s clear Walpin needs a refresher course.

That was a joke? Seems to me that Walpin is the joke.
