MOBILE -- To the bafflement of insect experts, gigantic yellow jacket
nests have started turning up in old barns, unoccupied houses, cars
and underground cavities across the southern two-thirds of Alabama.
Specialists say it could be the result of a mild winter and drought
conditions, or multiple queens forcing worker yellow jackets to
enlarge their quarters so the queens will be in separate areas. But
experts haven't determined exactly what's behind the surprisingly
large nests.
Auburn University entomologists, who say they've never seen the nests
so large, have been fielding calls about the huge nests from property
owners from Dothan up to Sylacauga and over into west-central
Alabama's Black Belt.
At one site in Barbour County, the nest was as large as a Volkswagen
Beetle, said Andy McLean, an Orkin pesticide service manager in Dothan
who helped remove it from an abandoned barn about a month ago.
(snip)
In previous years, a yellow jacket nest was no larger than a
basketball, Ray said. It would contain about 3,000 workers and one
queen. These gigantic nests may have as many as 100,000 workers and
multiple queens.
Without a cold winter to kill them this year, the yellow jackets
continued feeding in January and February -- and layering their nests
made of paper, not wax. They typically are built in shallow
underground cavities.

God Bless America - a society where we start out discussing giant
yellowjacket nests, and end up arguing politics -- and a very, very
narrow politics at that.
Bush versus the Democrats, Bush versus Clinton -- as if the
yellowjackets cared.
So far, nobody in this string has yet blamed the yellowjackets on (a)
African Americans (b) white supremacists (c) Jews (d) Muslims (e)
Hispanic immigration (f) the Masons and the Pope and the Queen of
England and the Illuminati conspiracy (g) rightwing evangelical
Christianity (h) gay people (i) Scientologists or (j) Godless
Communism.
And of course, we're also all ignoring the implication of the newspaper
article that started off this string -- the implication that global
warming, by giving the yellowjackets milder winters to survive, is also
enabling them to create bigger and bigger swarms.
I personally am enjoying the hell out of the fact that we don't have to
envision these yellowjackets wearing little Ku Klux Klan hoods, or
little yamulkas, and we're not talking about the yelllowjacket workers
watching Pat Robertson broadcasts on tiny TVs in their nests, or
alternately attending little paper mosques. And we're not - so far,
until I started this -- actually speculating about the irregular sex
lives of these creatures, who must be pretty kinky by human standards.
But I wonder if we maybe should be paying attention to the possible
global warming angle, since that was mentioned in the article. Unless
someone has some alternative scientific explanation for why the nests
are suddenly getting so big.
Does anybody in here know, actually? Any entomologists in the crowd?

There are a few in the article, and they don't know. The
swarms are bigger because they are taking more than one queen,
and the hives, nests, whatever are bigger to give the queens
enough room so they don't come in contact with each other. Sounds
to me like a whole change in the insects programming. Possibly a
mutation?

MOBILE -- To the bafflement of insect experts, gigantic
yellow jacket nests have started turning up in old barns

Insect experts are baffled and perplexed. Specialists
say it
could be from last year's mild winter, apparently the first
mild winter ever.

But "gullible warming" disciple and troll has it all figured
out, apparently. Gullible warming is causing yellowjackets
to nest with multiple queens, as many as twelve or more! No
doubt he'll explain this connection in future posts.

The level of desperation on some of these "Global Warming"
stories is breathtaking. This bee one doesn't quite beat
the global warming will cause killer poison ivy article yet,
but its in the ballpark. I've always thought it would be
interesting to see just where the global warming alarmists
jumped the shark, because the shark is now far in the rear
view mirror with these stories.

It's one of the perils of being stupid. Some people can only
keep one actual idea in their head, and some choose "gullible
warming". It is from that day forward the cause of all ills and
problems in the world. It's a great timesaver. Requires no
thinking.

Kinda like blaming everything on "terrorists!"
Right?

This one is CLEARLY blamed on warming in the article. The warm winters

The same thing is happening with pine beetles not dying off. Warm
winters are not a matter of speculation.

A lot of ponderosa pines out west are dying from a beetle infestation.
It's blamed on both the warm winters letting the beetles live and the
drought which is weakening the trees.

Oh, Green, COME ON!! Was it CLEARLY blamed when the article
said "Giant nests perplex experts"?
http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=
2006607170317
Perhaps "To the bafflement of insect experts" was the phrase that
clearly indicated they knew it was "gullible warming"? Or the
definitely conclusive "experts haven't determined exactly what's
behind..."

The warm winters mean wasps don't die off and form super
clusters.

The article said "a mild winter and drought conditions" not
winters. ONE mild winter.

The same thing is happening with pine beetles not dying off.

WHAT pine beetles, Green? These?
"They say Palm Beach County has some of the worst pine beetle
problems they've ever seen. But the real culprit is the
hurricanes."
"State foresters agree, saying that beetle activity seems
greater than normal in areas where hurricanes struck in the past
two years."
http://www1.tcpalm.com/tcp/local_news/article/0,2545,TCP_16736_
4970368,00.html
Again, nothing about gullible warming. Hurricanes damage the
trees and the beetles move in on them as they die.

Warm winters are not a matter of speculation.

ONE mild winter.

MOBILE -- To the bafflement of insect experts, gigantic

Insect experts are baffled and perplexed. Specialists say it
could be from last year's mild winter, apparently the first mild

Ever been to Mobile? EVERY winter is mild. Always has been. Always
will be. It might have something to do with the fact that Mobile
Alabama is located in what is known locally as "The South".(we actually
HAD a winter this year...on January 13th from Noon till three)
Also, Mobile has a draught EVERY SINGLE SUMMER (strangely enough, we
still manage to have the highest annual rainfall of any city in the
continental United States four years out of five, usually 60"-70").
Some other interesting facts about Mobile:
We are one of only two areas on the planet that experiences a
'Jubilee', where for some reason, in the middle of the night, sea
life crawls it way onto the beach and into igloo coolers (crab,
flounder etc).
It was during the Battle of Mobile Bay that the famous words, "Damn
the torpedoes! Full Speed Ahead!" was uttered by U.S. Navy Admiral
David Farragut.
In downtown Mobile, it is illegal to tie your alligator to a parking
meter or to walk down the street with a ice cream cone in your back
pocket.
Mobile is the originator of Mardi Gras in the United States (we had it
before New Orleans).
Oh yeah, we got REALLY big hornets nests.

But "gullible warming" disciple and troll has it all figured
out, apparently. Gullible warming is causing yellowjackets to
nest with multiple queens, as many as twelve or more! No doubt
he'll explain this connection in future posts.

I'm still waiting for them to link ingrown toenails to Global Warming.

Ever been to Mobile?

Drove thru Birmingham a few times. How's that?
Lived in Gulfport for a year. Know a little about the south.

EVERY winter is mild. Always has
been. Always will be.

Then I'm at a loss to explain why experts blame THIS mild
winter for the bug problem.

It might have something to do with
the fact that Mobile Alabama is located in what is known
locally as "The South".(we actually HAD a winter this

I lived south of Houston, Texas for 15 years. It snowed once.
I was out of town and missed it.

Also, Mobile has a draught EVERY SINGLE SUMMER

And yet, you STILL can't spell it? <G>

(strangely
enough, we still manage to have the highest annual rainfall
of any city in the continental United States four years out

'OTHER' interesting facts?

Maybe, but they perfected it.

Oh yeah, we got REALLY big hornets nests.

And it's all the President's fault.

I'll get them started. The heat causes your feet to sweat more
