Alexander (not Hamilton) used electronic surveillance in 353 BC to conquer
Asia. Julius Caesar wept that he would never be able to spy on innocent
Gauls the way Alexander did in Persia.

Yes, I remember reading that Alexander the Hacker was able to read emails
between the Persians and Doric Terrorists.

Committee Challenges Gonzales Domestic Spying Defense
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales insisted Monday that President Bush
is fully empowered to eavesdrop on Americans without warrants as part of the
war on terror, but his defense was challenged by Republican Sen. Arlen
Specter and committee Democrats during sometimes contentious questioning.

Funny. Gonzales has proven what the Dems said back when they disputed
his appointment by Bush, that he was a Bush YES MAN and a total buffoon.
I only hope that when the Indictments come down, and they will,
Garbonzo Gonzales is right behind Bush's name on the list of Constitution
violators.
Don't forget folks, these are the same people who SWORE under oath to
PROTECT and OBEY the US Constitution. And they haven't.

"President Washington, President Lincoln, President Wilson, President
Roosevelt have all authorized electronic surveillance on a far broader
scale."
- Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, today's Senate testimony

This is one of the strangest and most desperate arguments ever.
The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act became law in 1978, largely as a
result of Presidential abuses of Nixon....and Roosevelt, and Wilson, and
Lincoln...and ...tell me again just what *electronic* surveillance
Washington authorized again? What? Did he authorize "lightning rod
tapping" or something?
FISA set up a special court system that would authorize wiretaps at the drop
of a hat. Since 1978, more than 16000 applications for wire taps have been
sent to the FISA court. Six...count 'em... *6* have been denied.
Obviously, the technology exists that enables NSA to listen in on any phone
call they choose to. Obviously, the NSA has listened in on any phone call
they choose to. Obviously, the NSA didn't choose to listen in on any al
Qaeda phone calls that might have occurred between the time George WMD Bush
got a memo that said "Osama bin Laden Determined to Attack the U.S" and (one
month later) 9/11.
Presidents Washington, Lincoln, Wilson, and Roosevelt were not subject to
the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. And, thanks to President
Nixon's abuse of electronic surveillance, FISA was made the law of the land;
a law George WMD Bush proudly boasts that he's breaking.

He, in fact, didn't have stealth bombers; but he did have U2 spy balloons,
which he painted to look like UN balloons (in case the British shot them
down).

Here's a transcript of the actual testimony.- A. McIntire
http://releases.usnewswire.com/GetRelease.asp?id=60537
Here are the pertinent statemtents:
"General Washington, for example, instructed his army to intercept
letters between British operatives, copy them, and then allow those
communications to go on their way.
President Lincoln used the warrantless wiretapping of telegraph
messages during the Civil War to discern the movements and intentions
of opposing troops.
President Wilson in World War I authorized the military to intercept
each and every cable, telephone and telegraph communication going into
or out of the United States.
During World War II, President Roosevelt instructed the government to
use listening devices to learn the plans of spies in the United States.
He also gave the military the authority to review, without warrant, all
telecommunications, quote, "passing between the United States and any
foreign country."
The far more focused terrorist surveillance program fully satisfies the
reasonableness requirement of the Fourth Amendment"
