Panel subpoenas Gonzales for documents
By LAURIE KELLMAN, Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON -
Democrats issued their first subpoena to Attorney General Alberto
Gonzales on Tuesday, escalating their fight with the Bush
administration over the firing of eight U.S. attorneys.
The subpoena, issued a week before Gonzales is to testify under oath
before Congress about the firings, seeks hundreds of documents either
withheld or heavily blacked out by his department.
The subpoena sets a Monday deadline for Gonzales to produce the
documents.

The thing that is interesting to me is that if the Attorney General,
the Justice Department and the White House did nothing wrong,
why are they moving Heaven and Earth to try and cover it all up?

Whether they did anything wrong or not, is irrelevant to the fact that
they are obligated to be transparent before Congress.
Quite the contrary from requiring Congress to issue subpoenas, all
this information should be volunteered, routinely reported.
It's not a matter of whether anyone "has anything to hide"; it's that
the branches of government are not supposed to obstruct one another,
and, in particular, Congress is supposed to maintain a certain level
of oversight, in order to prevent any such situation from ever getting
to be a problem in the first place. President has veto power over
Congress, Congress has oversight authority; for example. President
would like to keep one of these without the other. And I'd like a
pony.
