PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - A former state lawmaker from
South Dakota is in custody on rape and other charges
against a pair of teen-age girls.
The girls were his foster children and 1 of whom
was a legislative page.
Republican Ted Klaudt (klowt) was arrested Friday
and did not enter a plea during two court appearances.
Klaudt had no comment and has been jailed on a $100,000 bond.
The rape charges carry penalties of up to 50 years in prison.
The two girls were among a number of children who
were sent to foster care in Klaudt's home under a
South Dakota Corrections Department program that
provides homes for young people who have no place
safe to go after leaving juvenile facilities.
The department is conducting a review of its foster
care program.
