GOP operative pleads guilty to making false statements
Activities during 2000 election
By STAFF REPORTS
The campaign manager for an unsuccessful Republican candidate for U.S.
Rep. Ellen Tauscher's seat pleaded guilty this week to making false
statements to the Federal Election Commission.
In an October 2000 written response to the FEC, Adrian Plesha, 33, of
Washington, D.C., had denied knowing the origin of telephone calls and
letters that registered Democrats in Tauscher's 10th Congressional
District received from the "East Bay Democratic Committee," urging
them not to vote for the incumbent Tauscher in the 1998 general
election.
The letters falsely appeared to be signed by Rep. George Miller,
D-Martinez.
Plesha, who managed the campaign of challenger Charles Ball, created,
reviewed, approved and authorized the letters and calls and allowed
them to be financed, in violation of the Federal Election Campaign
Act, the Justice Department said.
"It was a dirty trick, and they got caught. That's a good thing," said
Miller spokesman Daniel Weiss.
Plesha was released on his own recognizance and faces sentencing on
Nov. 21.
The prosecution is being handled by the Justice Department's Public
Integrity Section, and the investigation is being conducted by the
FBI.
