Green Dell threatens to blacklist suppliers
The founder Michael Dell says that he will discriminate against those
with big carbon emissions
Rhys Blakely
Dell has said it will blacklist supppliers that do not act to curb
their impact on the environment.
The move, the latest effort by the second-largest computer maker to
burnish its own green credentials, was announced by Michael Dell, the
chief executive, in London today.
In an interview with Times Online, the company's billionaire founder
gave warning to suppliers "not to underestimate the seriousness of our
intentions" on environmental matters.
The plans could have large knock-on effects for groups such as Intel
and AMD, both of which supply processors to Dell.
Despite recent losses in market share to its arch rival
Hewlett-Packard, Dell, a notoriously fierce negotiator, wields an
enormous influence among its suppliers.
Its procurement bill in Taiwan alone was estimated at more than $10
billion (£5 billion) last year.
Mr Dell added: "I think that governments and regulators are likely to
act [on green issues]. We would like to be well ahead of them."
In the first part of Dell's supplier plan, contractors will be asked
to begin reporting greenhouse gas emissions.
These figures will be added to the quarterly scorecard that Dell uses
when surveying component makers.
"These companies fight for every point they can get ? We think this
could have a big impact," Mr Dell said.
He added that corporate and government customers, which account for 85
per cent of Dell's revenues, are looking increasingly at the "total
cost of ownership" of computer assets – which includes the energy they
consume.
His comments follow a trend for green thinking in the technology
industry – estimated to contribute 2 per cent of the planet's carbon
dioxide emissions by Gartner, the analyst.
Bill Gates, the Microsoft co-founder has invested in ethanol fuel
technologies. Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the Google founders, have
provided funds for solar power research.
Mr Dell said that environmental concerns have become key in Dell's
relationships with its customers – both consumers trying to lead
greener lives and companies hoping to cap soaring power bills for IT
systems.
He added that his company's recent partnership with Wal-Mart, a
radical departure from the group's famous direct sales model, was only
the first part of a "massive expansion of retail channels" and that
similar partnerships with big UK retailers would be announced soon.
Dell's latest green initiative – dubbed Zero Carbon Initiative – also
contains a pledge to cut the carbon it emits per dollar in revenue it
collects by 15 per cent by 2012.
It comes as Mr Dell seeks to reposition his company after claiming
back his position as chief executive this year.
His return followed Dell falling behind Hewlett Packard, the leader in
the PC market.
Dell also expanded its Plan a Tree for Me programme to the UK and the
rest of Europe.
Under the scheme, Dell customers can contribute to the cost of a tree
to offset the carbon emissions produced by the use of their computer
over an average lifespan of three years.
The scheme costs £1 for a laptop computer and £3 for a desktop
machine.
The soaring costs of powering IT systems are becoming a
significantissue for companies.
Fujitsu Siemens, the IT group, recently estimated that the UK's
largest 200 companies could collectively save £123 million a year were
they to turn desktop machines off at night.
Meanwhile, according to the BroadGroup consultancy, a large data
centre – where the hardware that stores digital information is run –
can produce a carbon footprint the size of Leicester's.
Advances in desktop technology already mean that the latest Dell PCs
use far less energy than their predecessors of only a year ago, Mr
Dell said – with the average annual power bill in the US for the
latest Dell desktop falling from about $100 to about $25 in the past
year.
The group also unveiled a public relations drive to build "the
greenest PC on the planet" by canvassing the public for ideas through
IdeaStorm.com, the website that Dell started after criticism that it
neglected to listen to its customers.

If Dell really wants to be Green, they chould hire people who have working
brains *at least an 80 IQ would be nice) and can speak English when talkinmg
to Americans woth at least a 3rd grade level or proficiency. If they had
done this two years ago, I would not have had to spend too many man-hours
and about 2/3 a ream of paper dealing with their *****-ups.
For 18 months I tried to first unsibscribe to their software package (they
refused to cancell it), and when I refused to pay for it, they charged me
fees. After 18 months of this *****, I printed out every fucking e-mail I
had ever received from them, which showed just how stupid they were and
continued to be, and since I didn't want to waste my own ink on printing it
agasin should they "lose" it, I made a xerox copy and sent it to them
registered mail, return receipt requested. Too bad I didn't have tapes of
the idiots in India with whom I had to deal on the phone.
They finally cleared the charges from my account.
