'I just killed a kid'
Neighbor charged with shooting teen who walked on his grass
Tuesday, March 21, 2006; Posted: 10:40 a.m. EST (15:40 GMT)
BATAVIA, Ohio (AP) -- A man who neighbors say was devoted to his
meticulously kept lawn was charged with murder in the shooting of a
15-year-old boy who apparently walked across his yard.
Charles Martin called 911 on Sunday afternoon, saying calmly: "I just
killed a kid."
Police, who released the call's contents, said Martin also told the
dispatcher: "I've been harassed by him and his parents for five years.
Today just blew it up."
Larry Mugrage, whose family lived next door, was shot in the chest
with a shotgun. The high school freshman was pronounced dead at a
hospital.
Martin, 66, allegedly told police he had several times had problems
with neighbors walking on his lawn. He remained jailed without bond
Monday. His jailers said no attorney was listed for him.
Neighbors said Martin lived alone quietly, often sitting in front of
his one-story home with its neat lawn, well-trimmed shrubbery and flag
pole with U.S. and Navy flags flying.
Joanne Ritchie, 46, said Mugrage was known as "a good kid." She said
she always also considered Martin to be friendly.
Union Township is near Batavia, about 20 miles east of Cincinnati,
Ohio

Stupid oldl goat. He should have just hopped in his car and run over
the kid. Call it an "accident" and nobody cares.

When shooting a kid for walking on your lawn
is no longer a crime, then we need new gun laws.

The guy is in the wrong of course, but he says the kids family had been
harrassing him and if true, that needs to be considered. The answer to
the problems in this world is just leave other people alone.

If this guy was so fixated on his "perfect" lawn why didn't he just
put a fence around it?
Perhaps we should wait for the gun nuts to defend this murderers
"property rights" or some such nonsense.

%%%% It makes me wonder what really happened because you never do get the
complete story only a snippet from a reporter. The man could have had a
mental problem and snapped. The kid could have been threatening his life and
he defended himself or the man was just mean as hell and didn't like people
on his lawn.
They proclaim that every man is entitled to exist without labor and, the
laws of reality to the contrary notwithstanding, is entitled to receive his
"minimum sustenance" his food, his clothes, his shelter, with no effort on
his part, as his due and his birthright. To receive it, from whom?

a) Then nobody could SEE it and feel envy.
b) Zoning ordinance against fences.
c) Harder to hit the punks if they're hiding
behind the fence. :-)

100 or so years ago, this guy wouldn't have been bothered
by the law. It was simply assumed that treaspassers could
be killed. Your property was your kingdom and often your
life and livlihood depended on your property. Treaspassers
may steal away your livlihood, or they may have more sinister
intentions - and the sheriff was probably two days away by
horse.
Now just because it was a common way of thinking doesn't mean
it was especially ETHICAL. It's not proper to take some of
the reasons it was OK to kill rural treaspassers a century ago
and apply them to a modern suburban setting. Neither life nor
livlihood was threatened by a punk walking across the lawn.
Only ego, ones sense of propriety, of territory, was bruised.
There were plenty of other ways to address the problem, ways
to use the system. The old grouch didn't bother, 'solved' his
problem with all the civilized tact of some dopehead gang-banger.
Hang him high.
