Don't take me wrong, there's nothing more impressive than a large dog
that's well trained, and won't fart without first hearing his owner's
command. Even moreso are the dogs that do everything on silent
commands. I've worked around military dogs, and have seen first hand
how terribly they can bite, and I have a healthy respect for some of
the larger breeds with bad reputations (yes, I know that some big pit
bulls,Dobermans, and Alsatians are big lap dogs).
I had an interesting occasion to meet my son's neighbor on Saturday. Me
and the Mrs. had 2 of the grandkids out for a little field trip, and on
returning were walking towards the house. We were in his front yard,
some 20 feet or so from the door, when we heard some screaming and
hollering from next door. I didn't pay much attention, because it
sounded like a ***** mom was trying to catch a wayward child and
pour some whup ***** on him; certainly not my problem. Grandma had the
2 year old, and her big brother had run ahead to the door.
Suddenly---and I mean suddenly--appears a very large male Doberman on
a dead sprint at my wife and grandchild. I've played back the mental
tapes, and still can't believe how fast I put my handgun into play.
By now the owner of the dog appeared from behind the corner of the
house, just in time to hear me scream "I will shoot your dog if it
gets near my grandchild." Thankfully, whether the dog was distracted
by my screaming or by the grace of whatever guardian angel my
granddaughter has, the dog broke off his run, and its owner tackled
him. She meekly said "He doesn't bite". Yeah, right, he doesn't come
when called either. I held that pistol dead on that dog until we got
the door opened and everybody inside. I thought for a moment about
apologizing to her for scaring her with the pistol, but figured why
go back into a bad situation. End of story. When we left for the
evening, the neighbors house was buttoned up tight, without a sign of
life and we never heard a word about it.
Next time somebody tells you that you're paranoid and that's why you
carry a gun, show them this. I've been carrying since 1969, and its
only the 4th time I've had to show a gun, and I still haven't had to
fire a shot.
