Lots of us out there who don't buy the oil company propaganda from the
media that fast driving is cool. This site emphasizes the gas saving
aspects of 55 bu don't t forget that sensible speeds would also
reduce the killing and maiming the pedalphiiles do.

Efficiency minima setpoints have been creeping up for a long time. Used
to be a bit above 40mph is now around 60mph. Weight, rolling resistance
and cd are mostly the cause. Nothing practical gets their best mileage
at 80mph.

limit on a freeway, during the rush hour is very dangerous. Drivers
weave in and out of the lanes trying to break through traffic, they
tailgate, they flash their lights, they cut you off with just a few
feet to spare. They even pull out their guns.
Having a speed limit of 55 in other situations might work, I don't
know, but I can tell you based on my experience that it's hell on earth
during a rush hour on the freeway.

What you describe occurs when you underpost the speed limit. So it has the

during a rush hour on the freeway.
It's just as bad when there is little to no traffic. Simply because you know
it is possible to safely drive faster.

you do it for say 50 or 100 miles or more per day?
The tailgating and weaving will occur no matter what since whatever
the speed limit is set at, a lot of drivers will insist on going

That's true, but it's a matter of degree. It's probably about 10 times
as bad with a 55 mph speed limit. I drove almost 100 miles per day for
about 5 years with the 55 mph speed limit and about 7 years without.
I'm not saying how things should be. I'm just saying how they are. When
you reduce the speed limit on a freeway to 55, the speed of the flow of
traffic is about the same as it is at 65 except then you get people who
go 55 in the fast lane and refuse to move over and then the tempers
flair.
Some of the best speed limit rules I came up with after 12 years
(3-lane freeway) is:
1. People need to go with the flow of traffic.
2. The fast last needs to go at least 5 mph faster than the middle
lane.
3. The middle lane needs to go a least 5 mph faster than the slow lane.
4. When all the lanes are going at the same speed in heavy traffic,
there's hell to pay.
That is, unless we punished speeders with jail time and DL
suspension like we should. You'd get compliance then but all the
criminal coddlers want these killer pedalphiles to get off with a
fine!!!
I couldn't agree more. All states ought to pass Aggressive Driving laws
and enforce them rigorously. I'm all for putting reckless and
aggressive drivers in jail. You're not going to solve America's safety
problems by reducing speed limits to 55 on freeways though. When you
reduce the speed limit on a freeway to 55, the speed of the flow of
traffic is about the same as it is at 65. People just get crazier.

work. And the police can concentrate on those truely driving dangerously

last 4 accidents I was involved in, my car had a velocity of 0, and
the responsible parties certainly weren't speeding. What they weren't
doing is paying attention, and adherence to an arbitrary speed limit
isn't going to improve that failure of the majority of our driving

Sensible speeds have NOTHING do to with safety, moron. Example: the
last 4 accidents I was involved in, my car had a velocity of 0, and
the responsible parties certainly weren't speeding. What they weren't

If lower speed limits reduce accidents, then why have my last four
"accidents" been when my car was at a complete stop, and the other
vehicles were at far *below* the posted speed limit for the area I was
in?
