I don't actually know if gods exist or not. Beings who live on a higher
plane than ourselves are probably possible and might be called gods or
devils. But there is no evidence of them. The world functions exactly as if
gods don't exist... kids die of leukemia, OJ walks, etc. If a beneficent God
created the universe, he does not now interfere with its operation.
Simpletons like Rush and O' Reilly say that the complexity of the universe
proves that it had a creator. But that doesn't explain the existence of that
creator who must be even more complex than the universe itself. Where did he
come from and what is he made of? Why do they think there is only one of
him? Why is he male and what is the point of being male if there is only one
of you? Under the principle of Occam's Razor, God would be considered an
"unnecessary complication" which doesn't add anything to an explanation.
Even more interesting is something called the Anthropic Principle ( I
actually thought of this myself but found that it dates to at least the
1960s). It simply states that the universe must be precisely as it is or we
would not be here to ask questions about it. It assumes that there are a
myriad of alternate universes and times in which our existence would not be
possible. String Theory (now M theory) seems to suggest that there are
indeed many universes. Our local universe is just a four dimensional
membrane within an eleven dimensional hyper universe. And it probably
doesn't stop there. How far does it go? At least as far as to make our own
existence likely. Indeed, some think that anything which is possible exists
somewhere.
A stranger question is, "Why am I me and not you?". Why are the chemicals
sloshing around in my skull more important than yours? Indeed, does your
mind exist at all? And since the chemicals in my brain are constantly being
replaced, do I really exist for long? Is the physical location of an object
within a universe paramount? Is perspective everything?
One thing is certain. Atheism (or even polytheism) is a more fruitful
ideology than Middle Eastern monotheism, which tends to produce a decline in
civilization. There, the answer to every question is, "God did it".
BTW, for all you "believers", was Jesus' and Mohammed's poop holy?
