HYDERABAD : HSBC is spreading the network of processing centres by
opening a new business process outsourcing centre in Sri Lanka to
provide data processing and customer service facilities for the bank's
global operations.
The new centre at Colombo - with an initial capacity of 500 seats -
will be operated and controlled by HSBC Electronic Data Processing (
India ), its ITES arm.
According to informed sources, the Sri Lankan operations are expected
to begin in the first quarter of the next financial year. Operations
are expected to be ramped up in the latter part of the fiscal and
plans for recruitment of local talent are being finalised.
Mr Malcolm Wagget, COO of HSBC Electronic Data Processing, will also
be in charge of the Sri Lankan operations. Mr Wagget refused to either
confirm or deny the development with ET .
Headquartered out of Hyderabad , HSBC Electronic Data Processing has
been managing the back-office operations out of Hyderabad and
Bangalore , and will now have additional responsibility of new centres
in Visakhapatnam and Sri Lanka .
Right now, the company operates three processing centres in India :
two in Hyderabad and one in Bangalore . HSBC's Visakhapatnam
operations, spanning 1.9 lakh square feet, are set to commence by
March this year.
With more than 4,500 employees across three centres, the company's
operations in Hyderabad span 1.60 lakh sq feet and employs more than
2,500 people. The Bangalore operations covering 1.5 lakh square feet
employs around 1,500 people.
With the Sri Lankan operations, HSBC group will be outsourcing its
processing work to centres across three countries, China , India and
Sri Lanka . HSBC's first back-office processing centre was established
in 1995 at Guangzhou in China .
