A union stewart is one of the rank and file selected by the
rank and file to attend union meetings in behalf of the rank
and file. :-) Plus, the union stewart also talks with union
members who express a grievance and attend disciplinary
hearings with members who request such representation.

Let's see... if this thread is any example of what society
thinks, you side of the coin is losing as I see more posters
defending the US worker and/or the workers' rights to
organize than against them. Plus, given that unionization
has just begun in those 3rd world countries that US
companies have chosen for outsourcing, I'd say that age-wise
"organized labor" is in its 20s... not it's 70s.

Apparently due to the high costs of energy and scrap.
However, it does appear that as a result of tariffs, steel
production is up this year.

because of th union
dues. Why doesn't America produce much steel anymore?
http://columbus.bizjournals.com/columbus/stories/2003/09/22/daily1.html
Apparently due to the high costs of energy and scrap.
However, it does appear that as a result of tariffs, steel
production is up this year.

%%%% Why is it cheaper for the Japanese to buy our scrap steel ship it to

steel can be produced for??

Except for mainland China (four times our population) and Japan (only
about 6% more steel tonnage) we produce more steel than any other
country in the world.

Allow me to post a few personal experiences. Most of my jobs in been
in sales.
My previous job was non-union and had a base salary plus commission.
Management brought in the dreaded consultants who decided to eliminate
salaries and give us a small increase in commissions.(There was no
advance notice of this). I would have had to quadruple my volume of
sales just to get what I was making before. After several reps left the
remaining to of us insisted on a return to salary with the implied
threat that we would leave. Management reneged.
A few months later they came up with a new plan that both eliminated
salaries and lowered commissions. The actual plan called for a higher
commission on the first sale from a new customers but a lower (80
percent less) on repeat sales. Common sense tells one that usually the
first sale from a new account is very small. I left shortly thereafter.
Had there been a union these thing would not have happened.
My job before that was commission only. We voted to go union and the
contract called for a base salary or commission . whichever was higher.
The owners were worried that sales people would get lazy and just depend
on the guarantee. In fact, sales went up. Since we all had a guarantee
there was no longer a need to try to get a potential big customer who
might to something next week to do a smaller sale that week.
When I decided too take a new job the company assured me that under
the contract any sales that I made before my last day would be paid
regardless of when the money came in. Months later they were still
sending me checks.
A long time ago I drove a taxi in New York. One time I was rear ended
while I was waiting at a red light. The next day the owner called me in
to go over the accident report. It was all facts and no threats. The old
timers told me that before we had a union a driver was sent home for at
least one day even if the accident was clearly not his fault.

The best way for management to avoid unions is to
treat employees
fairly.
%%%% The best way to avoid unions is to keep the union
organizers away who
seek to line thir pockets with dues.
Actually, that will only make your employees wonder why you
are keeping the union organizers away--what is it that you
are trying to keep them from getting--what is it that you
feel they might deserve that you aren't already providing
them.
%%%% A good wage where they do not have to line the pockets of thugs. I've
seen it happen in my town many times. A union comes in the plant organizes,
demand more money and the worker is left with the same amount of money after
he thugs pockets are lined. The next year they go on strike for more money
and the company goes under from lost product contracts.
