impertinent Question # 107 |
After spending hundreds of billions to rebuild New Orleans wouldn't
it be interesting if massive numbers of those who are now scattered
beyond the gulf coast refused to return? They may be poor, but they are
not stupid, are they ?

Every news organization's poll has shown between 40 and 50% of the
evacuees have planned NOT to return.
For the first few years at least the probability is that New Orleans
will rebound as a mostly middle and upper class city. My guess is that
the city will go back to what it was pre-Katrina if they don't try and
attract something other than the service industry this time around.

I'm a bit too old to hold out hope for New Orleans. I expect an
orgy of waste, fraud, mismanagement, corruption, duplication, feather
bedding and cronyism. Not to mention plain old fashioned theft. All
resulting in city poised and vulnerable to the NEXT big hurricane to
hit the area.
When I was younger I could picture the city hiring the best
engineers, hydraulic experts and city planners from around the world.
Especially Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Venice. Then taking a bold step and
turning NOLA into a gracious city laced with water ways, lakes,
canals, and marinas, all tied together with pretty bridges. Don't
even TRY to keep the water out. Let the water IN and be a focal point
for a new and beautiful city which COULD be the wonder of the world !
Do I expect it to happen ? Maybe two or three NOLA disasters from now.
But not in my life time.
Regards, Bill
