Object: Impertinent Question # Thirteen.
Having opened the US market to massive exports of Chinese goods, we were
told that this will open up vast markets for high tech American products in
China. But isn't it more likely that these high tech products will be made
in China by the Chinese who will serve their OWN market, plus export
computers cars and aircraft, etc. to the US at half the US price ? Not only
will we not find vast markets in China we will lose foreign markets
elsewhere to Chinese competition. Or to put it another way: Anyone ever
meet a dumb chinaman? Not me.

No, we were told it would vastly reduce the cost of goods for American
consumers. Which is EXACTLY what it has done.

Speak for yourself. Your *neighbors* are doing fine. Perhaps you need to
talk to them and see if you can get some tips as to why THEY are succeeding
in life while you are not?
· America has the fastest-growing economy of any major industrialized nation
in the world.
· The economy has posted steady job gains for each of the last fifteen
months - creating over 2.4 million jobs since August 2003.
· The unemployment rate dropped from a peak of 6.3% last June to 5.4%
today-below the average unemployment rate of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.
· After-tax income is up by over 10% since the end of 2000, and household
wealth is at an all-time high.
· Inflation, interest rates, and mortgage rates remain at low levels.
· Homeownership rates are at record highs.
· The stock market has grown rapidly since the beginning of 2003, with the
Dow Jones Industrial Average up 25% and the NASDAQ up 56%.

I concur, Bill. Your questions are astute. Of course the high tech
products will be made in China. The US has allowed its own manufacturing
infrastructure to wither on the vine in the name of multinational profits.
I never thought of myself as a protectionist until Reagan took office. It's
been downhill ever since, with the exception of Clinton's tech boom.
Now that Bush has won his "mandate" <chuckle>, we had all better start
learning to speak Mandarin. Before Bush leaves office, China will have
grown in economic power significantly. The future belongs to China, and to
Asia in general.
The current imperial oil wars in the Middle East are all about cutting the
oil supply to China, which is the fastest growing industrial nation. How
do you think China will react?
