Faced with a failing effort in Vietnam against an enemy who refused to
fight according to our rules, we persuaded ourselves that if we could just
stop the Vietnamese from getting help from Laos and Cambodia we could win
the war. So we wasted another few years chasing shadows in these countries,
announcing great victories and counting bodies till the American people
realized it was all a fraud and demanded an end to the stupid war. In
Iraq the enemy refuses to fight the war according to our rules and the
Pentagon is persuading itself that if we could just stop the Syrians and
Iranians from helping the Iraqis we could solve our military problem. How
long will it take before Americans realize they are being bamboozled by the
war mongers in Washington and Jerusalem ?
