Object: Impertinent Question # Twelve
With US troops scattered around the world in over a hundred nations
and involved in an attack against a country which never attacked us, the
danger was always that it would drive the Russians and the Chinese together
to form a military alliance and the most dangerous enemy we have ever
faced. In a news item buried by the media whores on page twelve, the
Russians and the Chinese have announced plans for joint military maneuvers
for the first time. Could this be the first sign that our foreign policy
is not merely stupid but incredibly dangerous to our nation's security ?
That by protecting Israel we are ignoring our own best interests ?

I think you have hit the nail squarely and sunk it, Bill.
Our policies make no sense, unless you are a wingnut who's trying to
"help" the second coming get here sooner, ie WWIII.

Makes perfectly good sense to me Bill.

Doug Says: You two must be kidding? You are claiming that
since we support Israel that support is making Russia and China
become allies, and that also will make them enemies of the USA?
Are you guys so anti-Semitic that it clouds your pea-brains?
Russia and China are BOTH involved with the USA in respect to our
war on terror, and the common enemy of murderous Radical Muslim
terrorists goons is Israel. Why would Russia and China want to
join forces to attack the USA because we support one of their
allies? DUH!
Also, this is not the first time that Russia (under the banner of
the USSR at the time) and Red China were working cooperatively
in several endeavors, check the Vietnam war for just one
example - and I assure you the Vietnam war had nothing to do with
Israel! DUH!

What I have worried about is the new US F-22 Raptor
fighter/attack aircraft. If the US produces it, the Russians will be
driven to produce the MiG-1.42, which is equivalent. They can't afford
to do it themselves, so they will have to have a partner, with China
being the most likely. If they produce it with China, China will make
all kinds of promises not to sell it abroad, but with their economy,
they can produce more of them than anyone else can, so they'll do what
they want, and while they may not have to worry about it, Russia will.
So, there's no advantage for the US, and none for Russia, but there is
for China and any client nation of it that is run by a world-class nut
like the mullahs of Iran.
There is the chance that in the US trying to overreach it's
territorial authority, that it could drive Russia and China closer
together, after all, in the early '70s Richard Nixon got the Chinese
to sign a mutual defense treaty because they feared Russia.
As for bringing Israel into this, I don't know how you figure
that it has anything much to do with them, but I would like to know
why, so feel free to respond to this and let me know what you think.

Thanks for the interesting comments. I think we can agree on
most things, and perhaps see other things from a slightly different
perspective. Here's a couple of thoughts in no particular order re our
geopolitical position. I'm not sure I see the aircraft development as being
a serious matter. From Vietnam to Iraq we can see the declining importance
of maga- billion dollar weapons systems. In place of massive carrier task
forces, cruise missiles and smart bombs we would have been better off with a
few dozen West Pointers who could speak Arabic. We are now furiously
training them in true military fashion. Locking that barn door long after
the horse has been stolen !
China and Russia have had a nervous, uneven relationship in the
past but we seem to be doing all in our power to drive them into each others
arms. If this is not treason it sure smells like it ! Following the Soviet
Union's collapse we should have been making friendly overtures to them.
Instead, we pushed NATO right up to their borders by admitting Poland and
other east European nations to full NATO membership. A provocative and
stupid thing to do. Saying we will go to war if Poland is attacked makes no
sense in view of what little Poland has to offer the alliance. It's a stupid
trade- off. Our moving to control middle east oil supplies can only cause
worry to Russia and only encourages the hawkish Russian elements to react.
Just as WE would react if Russia tried to muscle in on mid- east oil
fields.
As for China they resent the American presence in Asia and seeing us as the
sole superpower, they resent our meddling in the Taiwan matter. Our
involvement in Korea and Vietnam was a further provocation to a nation who
sees Asia as THEIR back yard. So WE have set the stage for a
rapprochement between A. The largest, and B The most populated nation
on
earth. I know a six year old child who would call this a stupid thing to
do.
As for the invasion of Iraq, it was planned well before 9/11 and
had nothing to do with WMD or Iraq liberty or terrorism or democracy or
elections. To understand it we have to go back to Vietnam. (And here one
has to expect the critics to play the old anti semitic card). The
American jewish community opposed the Vietnam war- not on ideological
grounds as did the academic community. They opposed it because it put US
troops and US forces in the WRONG part of the world ! For years they have
been trying to get US forces committed to Israel's defense on the ground in
the Middle East. Had Vietnam been located closer to Tel Aviv there would
have been NO jewish anti war movement.. Just as there is no jewish anti war
movement focussed on Iraq. They LOVE it !
Their hopes were finally realized with the arrival of major figures of
power and influence in Washington. Figures such as Richard Perle, David
Frum, Norman Poderetz, Assistant Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz, and
Douglas Feith - as close as possible to being a foreign agent at the
Pentagon as it's possible to be without being arrested. But hope springs
eternal. Ongoing investigations by the FBI may yet reveal the extent to
which our government is being undermined by Israeli agents disguised as US
government employees. I repeat. I am NOT anti Semitic. I m Pro- American
and wish the Israeli people well. I would ask only that they get off our
backs and stop trying to fight their battles to the last drop of American
blood. Their shameful fight to grab Palestinian territory is a grubby
episode in their history and one which we should be ashamed to support in
any way.
Regards, Bill Mc.
