right...freedom of speech has no place on the airwaves.

They have every right to say what they want. The radio stations have
every right not to carry their racist, homophobic, xenophobic rants.

right Brian? how about getting rid of sharpton and jackson too.

Can't say I'm against that idea.

or better yet..getting rid of the crap that the music industry calls
rap?

"Crap" is a relative term. For years, country music has been dealing
with many of the same issues rap music deals with, but nobody cared,
because it was white folks performing it.

Some people seem to think that "freedom of speech" means anyone can
say anything about anybody at anytime they want. Does anybody
actually think that that was what America's Founders had in mind when
they wrote the first amendment to the Bill of Rights?

I don't agree. I think America's founding fathers were referring to
the right to criticize the Government without being punished when they
wrote the 1st amendment. I think they relied on civilized society and
common-sense for the rest.

The more I think about it, the more I believe Imus 1st Amendment

doing that for years. Maybe it was about his stance on the war, the
handling of Katrina.... Still, Imus was an incredibly stupid racist,

The law of civilized society that says Imus's employer can fire
him if they want to.

even for violating his right to free speech?

Imus is free to say whatever he likes, on his own dime.

There are no laws protecting you from having your feelings hurt and

the right to destroy a mans life because of that.

There also are no laws preventing CBS from firing anyone they like --
for good reason or bad.
Maybe there should be laws like this, but there aren't.
As for "destroying a man's life" -- well, Imus isn't dead, is he?
And he presumably has a lot of money from all the previous years that
CBS and his sponsors paid him to promote his nasty ***** on the
airwaves.
And since we're talking about the ability to "destroy" a person's life
- I wonder what it does to the brains of the black women on the team,
and on the brains of black women and girls everywhere, when they see
that they can work like hell to become good at what they do, and some
***** with a radio microphone just writes off all that effort and
discipline as worthless -- because of their race.
I think most white Americans, whether we're racists or not, don't
really want young black women to be "hos." We sure don't want them
having any babies out of wedlock, for one thing, because we're scared
of those babies born out of wedlock. We want all black babies to be
born into stable families after a nice church wedding, because that
makes us feel safer.
Whether we're racists or not, most of us white folks also want young
black girls to work hard, to strive to succeed within the system, all
that Sunday School and Girl Scout stuff -- because when they're
working hard and playing by the rules, they're ess trouble to us.
Most African American families, I'd guess -- I'm white, so I don't
really know -- also want young black girls to strive for excellence
and achievement, and not to go the supposedly easier route of walking
the streets and turning tricks.
So here are a bunch of hard-working black women who seem to be playing
by the rules, who are working to make it economically within the
framework govening our system, just as everybody tells them to -- and
jerks like Imus treat them just like streetwalkers, based on their
race.
And sure, some black jerks -- the worst "gangsta" rappers -- are doing
just the same thing. But that's no justification.
What's the effect of either white assholes like Imus or black assholes
like the women-hating gangsta rappers peddling the fantasy that all
young black women are "hos"?
It's got to be destructive. It's 's the kind of idiotic bigotry
that's almost designed to encourage black girls to be criminals or
revolutionaries -- and I don't know about anybody else, but I don't
want them to be playing either role.
And if CBS "destroys Imus's life" when the network fires him for this
kind of anti-social behavior ... well, life is tough sometimes. Too
damned bad for Imus. If he'd thought what he was saying before he
said it, he could have avoided this result.
