How can you Euros talk about guns if you have never owned them? Have
you ever shot a gun? Have you ever felt the thrill of seeing that what
is before your gunsite crumble before your power? Have you ever have
your blood quicken at the smell of cordite and gun oil?

You mean like someone is in the US from the Middle East on a student
visa and they want an AK-47 for some reason? I've said before that it is
unlikely that al Qaeda will use firearms specifically or as the main
force of any generalized attack in the United States. Of course after
the success of VTech shooter, perhaps I'm wrong about that.
But really, I still don't see the effort al Qaeda has to go to to get
someone in the US being worth it for them. I think they will stick with
bombs.

Sure, but I'm taking a more individualistic approach to the issue. As
most people (regardless of level of mental illness) tend to view
themselves as perfectly sane, and few are forcibly evaluated prior to
having already committed an offense, I think submitting ones-self for
some level of evaluation voluntarily should be considered as sane an
act as having your blood-pressure checked.
As a society we have a tendency to treat with suspicion and
condescencion those who investigate and aknowledge a personal problem
(which could be anything from a drinking problem to schizophrenia) as
the first step in dealing with it, making a preferable alternative of
continuing behavior unchecked to the point of incarceration or death.
As un-macho as this sounds, I think it would be a sensible
individualistic approach to go hand-in-hand with the cherished right
to bear arms in our self defense, in much the same way as fiream
safety is.

I'm a college student, and I don't feel that the "authorities" at my
campus could do a damn thing to protect me in the event some nutter
goes off his meds and decides to start shooting.
I was in a class recently, and a student fainted. We couldn't even
figure out how to get help in that situation. No phone in the
classroom. No information about who to call if we had a phone. When
help finally arrived it was in the form of a campus security guard who
appeared to be approximately 89 years old.
What the ***** would that old unarmed geezer been able to do if some
nut was walking around blasting people? The best I can hope for is
that someone would call 911, and that police would show up in time to
recover my corpse.
It is very troubling to me that the campus administration can demand
that I trust them to protect my life, when they don't actually do
anything to protect my life. I understand that it may be a difficult
challenge for them to protect their students in times like these. Why
can't they understand that fact as well, and leave my right of self-
defense alone?

2nd Amendment or death.

Me personally, I would be far more seriously concerned if I went to a
college campus where all the students and teachers were armed with
guns. Could you imagine a teacher ever flunking a student? You would
be far safer if fewer people had guns as is the case in civilized
countries.

Do you think the Swiss are uncivilized? Basically every adult male in
that country is required to possess a military grade assault rifle.
For some reason all those guns don't seem to drive them to kill each
other. Can you explain why you believe guns turn Americans into crazed
killers, when other populations with high rates of gun ownership do
not have high numbers of gun murders? The problem is not the guns,
it's the shooters.

Here we go again with more excuses from the gun lobby. If you think
you would be safer if every high school and college student brought a
gun to school, you are deluding yourself. A better comparison of
countries is larger multicultural English speaking countries like
England or the Australia, which have strong gun conrol and low gund
deaths compared to the USA. Switzerland and Israel are small
countries with well regulatd militias, something that is not the case
in America where anyone can get a gun. Please stop it with the stupid
argument that guns don't kill, people do, that is a nonsense, guns are
dangerous weapons that are far more deadly than other weapons.

Resorting to strawmen and logical fallacies does not help your case.

Plenty of stabbings and personal crime though. Shootings too, though
admittedly not as frequently as the US.

Well, America was created because of free people defending their

America will reject that principle of leaving ultimate authority in

And then you would'nt be able to act all smug when spouting off your

Let me educate you mate from the brainwashing and propaganda that has
been drilled into your head by the gun nut lobby. I have lived in
both the USA and Australia for many years to know that Australia has
far less violent crime than the USA, so instead of relying on the gun
nut lobby stats that I have seen on the board, I researched the
official stats for 2003 for both countries and converted crime to a
rate per 100,000 population and guess what? For violent crime the USA
has over 3 times the homicide rate, and over twice the assault and
robbery rate which make up violent crime stats. The only exception
was rape which the USA was a little lower than Australia, but since
only 12-20% actually report rape, this figure may not be that
meaningful.
2003 Crime Statistics USA Per Australia Per USA % of
Description Number 100,000 Number 100,000 Australia
Population 290,809,777 20,008,700
Homicides 16,582 5.7 341 1.7 335%
Assault 4,606,740 1584 158,269 791 200%
Robbery 596,130 205 19,709 99 208%
Rape 198,850 68 18,237 91 75%
USA crime stats: http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/abstract/cvusst.htm#one
Aus crim stats: http://www.aic.gov.au/publications/facts/2005/facts_and_figures_2005.pdf
Now tell me if there is anything you don't understand about these
stats and if you are proud that the USA has such a high degree of
violent crime?

Well, America was created because of free people defending their

Nonsense, stop lying. America was created to be free from British
rule.

America will reject that principle of leaving ultimate authority in

And then you would'nt be able to act all smug when spouting off your

You are probably right, the gun nut lobby is so strong I doubt that
sensible gun laws will ever be passed in the USA and instead of being
the "free country" that you claim it is, America will be more like
Iraq where the people are free, but less safe because so many weapons
are freely available.

Your comment reminds me of an attractive woman I met in a bar one time
who revealed that she was carrying a concealed firearm. Turns out she
had been raped in the past, at a time whe she did not have a firearm.
She reached the same obvious conclusion that I have reached regarding
firearms, which is ultimately everyone is responsible for their own
life and safety.
While possibly well-intentioned, your gun-grabbing fixation leads
inevitably to one result: victims being unable to defend themselves
form attack.
Which is exactly what happened at VA tech.

If women were allowed to carry guns then the incidence of rape would

Since most crime - with or without guns - is perpetrated by males,
let's allow ONLY women to own and carry guns.

You are merely deluding yourself if you think that if every woman had
a gun in her purse or her crotch is going to save them from being
raped when the opposite is true, with easy access to guns as you have
in America, a gun is the weapon of choice for many rapist who have the
advantage of choosing the easiest time to rape their victim. This is
not the gunfight at the OK coral where the quickest draw wins. And
what sort of life is that where everyone has to carry a gun 24 hours a
day to think they can defend themselves.

While possibly well-intentioned, your gun-grabbing fixation leads

While possibly well intentioned, you pro gun fixations is a delusion.
If gun ownership made you safer, the USA would not be leadig the
western world in homicides as it does. Of course you haven't figured
out that the real problem is a psycho in the USA has easy access to
guns which is the cause of the problem and arming everyone will only
lead to more gun violence as it has in Iraq.
