Object: 'Increasingly Unpopular War'
Did you know that Iraq is an "increasingly unpopular war"? If you read the
news, you probably do, because that has become a catch phrase, turning up
"about 413" times in a Google News search for the past 30 days.
Now, we can't exactly quarrel with the accuracy of this description. When the
coalition liberated Iraq, something like 70% of Americans said they supported
the war; that figure is closer to 30% or 40% now.
But here's what we're wondering: If support started creeping upward again,
would journalists start referring to Iraq as an "increasingly popular war"?
We're guessing not. We did a Factiva search for "increasingly popular war,"
and only four hits turned up in the entire database:
A reference in the May 23, 1988, Aviation Week & Space Technology to
"the increasingly popular war against drugs."
An article in the December 2005 issue of Political Research Quarterly
titled "Hegemony and Hamburger: Migration Narratives and Democratic Unionism
among Mexican Meatpackers in the U.S. West," in which author Phil Apostolidis
observes that labor unions have "taken the highly unusual step of officially
opposing an increasingly popular war promoted by the president."
One reference to Ultimate Adventure and one to Laser Tag, each of
which is described as an "increasingly popular war game."
The "Hegemony and Hamburger" guy does seem to be referring to Iraq, but he's
an academic, which means that our (admittedly incomplete) search turned up no
evidence that any journalist has ever referred to an actual armed conflict as
an "increasingly popular war." It just doesn't seem to be part of the
reportorial vocabulary.
--
The trouble with American journalism, in short, isn't that it's too skeptical,
but that it's too willing to throw skepticism to the wind when it suits the
agenda of proclaiming every war a Vietnam and every Republican president a
Nixon.

U.S. Arming Sunnis in Iraq to Battle Old Qaeda Allies
By JOHN F. BURNS and ALISSA J. RUBIN

BAGHDAD, June 10
With the four-month-old increase in American troops showing only
modest success in curbing insurgent attacks, American commanders are
turning to another strategy that they acknowledge is fraught with
risk: arming Sunni Arab groups that have promised to fight militants
linked with Al Qaeda who have been their allies in the past.

Well, as long as they have promised, what could go wrong?

Puppet Maliki will veto it. Parliament need a two thirds majority to
over-rule him.
