Visiting Indian Commerce minister to sign trade agreements

Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry and Law and Justice Shri Arun
Jaitley is arriving today in Israel at the head of a business
delegation to sign trade agreements. The agreements are between the
Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), the
Indian embassy in Israel, the Israel Export and International
Cooperation Institute, the Manufacturers Association of Israel, and
the Federation of Israeli Chambers of Commerce.
A banquet marking Israel's tighter economic ties with India will be
held tonight, under the sponsorship of the Israel-Asia Chamber of
Commerce. Indian Ambassador to Israel Raminder Singh Jassal will
attend, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Silvan Shalom will be the
guest of honor.
The visit will conclude on Wednesday with a conference in Tel Aviv on
business relations between the two countries, opportunities for joint
ventures, and cooperation in technology, agriculture, infrastructure,
chemicals, and jewelry.
The Israel Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Labor reported that
Israel-India trade totaled $1.43 billion in January-September 2003,
including $624 million in exports and $806 million in imports.
Diamonds and precious stones accounted for 57% of exports,
communications products 11%, chemicals and plastics 23%, and medical
equipment 5%.
Diamonds and precious stones accounted for 54% of imports, textiles
and textile products 20%, chemicals and plastics 11%, and tea and
household items 4%.
Export Institute figures show that the number of companies exporting
to India has grown from 70 to 650 in the past decade. Industrial
exports to India, excluding diamonds, were up 9.4% to $181 million in
2003.
