*Confrontations with Iran must be avoided, Indian PM*

NEW DELHI, March 6 (Xinhuanet) -- All sides must work to find mutually
acceptable compromise solutions on the Iran issue and a confrontation should
be avoided at all costs, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told Indian
Parliament here Monday.
The prime minister made it clear that India's foreign policy should be
guided by national interests, and that India's position on such issues should
not be based on the position of other countries.
"The government will continue to monitor the situation closely, and will
deal with the Iran issue with the seriousness that it merits. In dealing with
this issue, we will pay due attention to our relationship with Iran, the need
to maintain peace and stability in the Gulf region and safeguarding our own
security," Singh explained.
