Bush Seeks $78 Billion in Health Cuts Over Five Years

Feb. 5 (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush proposed cutting $78 billion
from U.S. health spending over five years, setting up a potential fight with
congressional Democrats.
The $701 billion budget for the Department of Health and Human Services that
Bush sent to Congress today includes $66 billion in cuts over five years
from Medicare, which provides health insurance for 43 million Americans.
Bush also would cut $12 billion from Medicaid for the poor and from a
program that provides health insurance for low-income children.
``On health care, rather than trying to solve the crisis by lowering costs
and covering more people, the president's plan will make the crisis worse by
raising costs and failing to cover those who need it most -- our nation's
children,'' said Senator Edward M. Kennedy, the Massachusetts Democrat who
heads the Senate health committee, in a statement.
